At least some of them are LiteOn drives. Look for SMART-BURN and/or SMART-X on the box.

I bought on too. How can I tell what brand it is? It just says Atapi 48X16X48 in win XP and Nero. The Registration card says I/O Magic. It has one button and it rectangluar and on the left in just reads the speed. I would love to know if it can do SD2. It's alot faster than my Afreey 52X cdrom and I can't beat $20 after MIR. If it's I/O Magic, What brand is it? If anybody knows who makes it would be a great help.

BillyG posted something about the Pacific Digital 48x16x48 drive in my Best Buy Deals Thread.

Apparently It's a rebadged BenQ(Acer). I've read the the reviews on the 48X12X40. That one can write SD2. So hopefully this is just a faster version of that model. I will try it on my Madden 2003 game and let everybody know. I was hoping it was a LiteOn that's why I bought it but I'm pretty happy. It's a whole lot faster than my Afreey 52X. So I'm pretty satisfied. :D

It could also be an optorite 48x16x48x.
IOmagic and digital research are same.

At first that's what I thought too, It was an Optorite. The reason I don't believe it is anymore. Optorite uses numbered firmware. My firware uses letters like BenQ. The firmware on my drive is (A.UZ) and the model number reads 4816P. The firmware on BenQ website for model 4816P 48X16X48 uses (A.xZ). That's pretty close, The only thing that makes me wonder is both Optorite and BenQ models that are 48X16X48 have 2 button faceplates and mine only has one.

There is no way to tell for sure, I mentioned optorite as a possibility, digital research ships many different oem drives in their boxes.
Iomagic/DR has user forums on thier website, just ask a question to find out what kind a drives people have been getting lately.

That was a wild guess about the Digital Research drive being a BTC drive. Most of them have been Benq/Acer drives.

It was a good wild guess, when I looked at some forums at iomagic, several users mentioned that they have gotten btc drives.
