LG triple format questions

Postby Macedo on Fri Aug 29, 2003 4:30 pm

Alright I have only recently decided it was affordable to purchase a dvd writer, like many, so now before I make my final decision I just had a couple questions. Knowing this is a great place to ask, I thought I'd take the best chance with you guys here :)

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/prodde ... wdeptid=18

That drive is the 4040B correct?

Secondly, what ripping speeds can you get with it from dvd's? Is it stuck on 2x?

Lastly I read that it suggests you install it as the secondary master with no slave attached. Is that necessary?

Thanks :)[/b]

well, from the picture it sure looks like the LG GSA-4040B.
no other LG drive looks like it.

i've no idea what "DVRW056F" model number is.
didn't see anything like it in LG's website page for the drive.
http://www.lgeus.com/Product/CD/GSA_4040b.asp

since this drive (LG GSA-4040B) is the only drive to burn DVD +/- R/W -RAM (to my knowledge), this must be it.

Ah, I checked www.lge.com and not the us one. Figured that was the us site. Nothing even close to that drive on the site I checked.

Thanks.

I just bought one (directly from futureshop, not online) today, and, yes, it's a 4040b. You can see it if you read the description on the futureshop webpage too. "For versatility, look to the LG Super-Multi Drive. The GSA-4040B records...."

I have no clue where they got that model number. Probably some funny manufacturer number on the drive itself. It's nowhere on the retail box. I've already installed mine so I'm too lazy to take it back out and check it. ^_^

I ignored the "secondary master with no slave attach" stuff. Sounds kind of silly.... ^_^ (Actually, I didn't read the manual.....)

I haven't tried 4x yet. Just test-burning an -RW right now, but I heard people say 4x isn't support with the bundled Nero. And RecordNow just isn't supported at all (yet).

lol woops :) I rarely like to read all the paragraphs describing how wonderful the drive is.

I'll be anxiously awaiting news of what speed it can rip dvd's at if you'd be so kind :)

sorry, couldn't find that text anywhere on the linked FutureShop webpage.

My apologies. I kind of assumed that the link that Macedo posted was the same as the Futureshop $200 sales that I happened to have opened at the time.

Here's the link I read:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=18&WLBS=fsweb8&sku_id=0665000FS10031983&catid=&newdeptid=18

Mysteriously, it looks like the same drive to me.....I don't think LG had anything other than the 4040B that's both +/- ......

And, my second apology, no it doesn't include Nero. I read it somewhere last night that it does, but the one that I bought doesn't. Comes with B's Recorder or something like that. Obviously, I didn't look at both the bundled software and the manual.

Yay! A power outage in my area killed the first DVD I burnt on my LG! Good thing it was RW.

BTW, the 2X thing that I read was suppose to be the NeoDVD that was bundled as well B's Recorder. (Hence my confusion with Nero.)

Heard it is fixed with A300 firmware (?), but I didn't bother verifying it myself. Don't plan to use that NeoDVD thing anyway.

BTW, that "secondary master only" thing originates from the "readme.txt" with the firmware flash. Says it have to be the only thing on secondary before flashing. (I did follow the instructions, while feeling really silly.) You don't have to put it in secondary for normal usage.

BTW, Macedo, follow this thread for some nice test results from Loobster.

A brief quote from Loobster's post:

""Contact", 6.46GiB, full DVD rip and decryption with DVDDecrypter 3.16. Done in 14:51. This is only about 2 mins slower than my Lite-ON 16x drive."

Not bad. ^_^

Hi guys.

Well I bought that Future Shop special this morning and I can tell you it's a sweet deal.
I've already flashed the firmware to A300 (and yeah, I disconected the slave drive while I did that). While my other CDR software was able to identify the drive, my version of Nero couldn't see it (DOH!).

After an upgrade to Nero 6 all is well and I'm burning my first disc as I write this.

I haven't installed or tried the bundled software. Maybe one day....

Macedo, If you want to get the $199.00 Canadian price you better buy soon because I have the feeling these will sell out.

Thanks luminosius :D

After checking and seeing that its apparently quite a good drive to rip from I placed my order asap. Don't have time to go to FS to buy it but since its free shipping this is just as good.
