Toshiba SD-M1712 Region Free Firmware?

Postby skinfreak on Wed Feb 19, 2003 3:38 pm

Hello!

Just got a black Toshiba 1712 DVD-ROM drive from Dabs.com and cannot find RPC1 firmware anywhere even though i swear i found a site the day i ordered it. Anyone know if the 1612 1004 RPC1 firmware update will work on this drive. Failing that, any ideas?

Thanks

Yeah, it looks like there's problems. I can't get to it via www.rpc1.com either.

Yeah, the server is down. I don't know why, but it's the fault of our host. No idea when it will be back online, but the host cannot be reached

Quiet....yes and no. Most discs it play absolutely silently, but on others (mainly DVD movies) is makes a hell of a racket. I dunno if there's something wrong with it?

I got the RPC firmware in the end and as far as that goes, its the best DVD drive i have ever used for multiregion.

Dunno about the noise though.... :(

That sure sounds backwards. DVD movie playback is when you want the drive to be quietest. LiteOn DVD-ROM drives, for example, are quite noisy when reading data discs at high speeds, but they slow down to a virtually inaudible whisper when playing back DVD movies. Is your drive spinning at high speeds when playing DVD movies, or is there some other source of noise?

Hmm, that's really odd. All the Toshibas I've dealt with, slowed down to 2x speed at DVD movies playback and were absolutely quiet. What player do you have? I prefer WinDVD.

It makes a sound as if the disc isn't balanced....kind of rattling. The noise is form the discs and not the mechanics of the drive i believe. But it happens with a lot of discs :-?

Rattling, as if it were unbalanced? To me a rattle isn't just the whir of the discs spinning at high speeds. I would think a rattle is indicative of a defect and not just a noisy but otherwise normal device. Perhaps there is something wrong with the disc clamping mechanism or the vibration damping system, if it has one. But it is hard to say since I can't actually hear it and have to rely on your description. When it makes the noise, can it still read the discs?

it reads discs fine. I jsut used Nero CD speed with the OEM nero disc and it was near silent :D. If i chuck in the DVD of Donnie Darko, it makes noise...dunno...weird!

Hmmm... weird indeed. Well, all I can say is you are the best judge as to whether the drive deserves a look by the repair people or is just a bit idiosyncratic.

I'd wager on schitzophrenic at the moment....;) I think maybe Donnie Darko was too mind boggling for the drive to comprehend...if i put in usual suspects, it might make it work, no? :D

Perhaps something a bit more white-bread would help.
