Toshiba SD-M1712 and SD-M1612 any practical difference

:roll: Toshiba added a 'feature' to this drive that limits its reading speed of CSS encrypted DVD movies to less than half that of other drives.

is that true ?

It is true that Toshiba limits the speed of CSS ripping on their drives. Others do it too...
