Toshiba SD-M1402 cannot read DVD-RW? Several IDer say it can

Postby Jon_J on Tue Sep 16, 2003 10:51 am

I burned a data DVD-RW using Nero 6.0.0.11 using DVD/ISO and then a second try using DVD UDF/ISO 1.02.
It is just 1 subdirectory with 1292 files (Joliet).
Media is Maxell DVD-RW
Media code/Manufacturer ID JVC/VictorT7
DVD burner is Plextor PX-708A
DVD-ROM is Toshiba SD-M1402, tried several firmwares. 1012, 1028, xy14, (xy14 removes region protection)
This disc is almost full (4.3 GB) It works fine in my Plextor burner, but not my Toshiba reader.
These ID programs list my SD-M1402 as capable of reading DVD-R, DVD-RW.
DVDInfo Pro RC5
DISC Info 1.5.0
Nero Tool 2.00

If in fact these 3 programs are correct about my reader as capable of reading DVD-R, DVD-RW, what can I be doing wrong?
Thank you for reading this,
Jon

According to technical specification for Toshiba SD-M1402, this drive is capable of reading only the following DVD discs:

DVD-ROM ( DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18 ), DVD-R - version 1, 3.9GB media only (read).

Mentioned diagnostic programs sometimes report false information about the drive (drive reports back false data).

Thank you for your reply, Han.
Your'e right about the DVDRW issue. I downloaded the manual in PDF

I just bought some DVD-Rs (Memorex - ProDiscG02)
They work just fine in both of my Toshibas using the compilation mentioned in my 1rst post.

BTW this DVD-R is 4.7GB
The PDF manual shows this in the specs:
DVD-ROM (DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18), DVD-R (read)
No mention of the size. (May be newer manual)?

Thank you,
Jon
