Sony DWU-14A DVDRW

Postby IntenseMayhem on Tue Dec 30, 2003 3:22 pm

Im sorry this maybe a newbie Q but im really desperate for help.

When I first bought this, it worked great with my standard dell pc and burned with most programs except PrimoDVD and Recordnow Max.

I bought a new motherboard: Abit KV7 and no programs will now recognise my burner

In device manager it displays the full name "Sony DWU-14A DVDRW" so i know the computer is finding the burner ok but I dont know what else to do now.

I updated the firmware 10 mins ago but still nothing changed in nero, only image burning thing available.

Any help is greatly appreciated and please please please help thx

Also my DVD writer is set to master and my standard cd player is set to slave if that makes a diff

Any more information i can give asap if needed.

I know this will happen if the version of Nero you are using is an OEM version intended only to work on a particular CD/DVD drive. If it doesn't find that drive, then it will only display Image Recorder.

Download the free program DVD Decrypter from http://www.dvddecrypter.com/. It has a Write ISO mode. See if that mode detects your Sony drive as a burner or not.

A very very big thanks to you 2 for taking time out to help me, I really appreciate it!!

Turned out to be being very stupid, it was an OEM version of Nero, which I didnt know was available.

Me being stupid, guess thats the answer to most problems eh?

But does anyone know why my rw isnt compatible with recordnow max or primodvd? I have just formatted my hd so im not sure if it maybe the px engine or it may be my firmware, just asking incase some1 has had the problem before and I can resolve it.

Cheers and thx again!!

It could be that you have an older version of the PxEngine installed. The PxEngine is the burning engine for RecordNow MAX and PrimoDVD.
It is updated to support new CD/DVD burners as they are released.

You can download the latest version of the PxEngine from Sonic's web site:

http://support.sonic.com/downloads/engine.asp

Although, that new version says it only for the later versions of RecordNow. I am not sure if it will work with older versions and probably not with PrimoDVD. If not, I found this link to an older version of the PxEngine (v358):

ftp://128.121.126.47/pub/PxEngine/PxEngineUpdate358.exe

The v358 version works with the Sony DRU-500A drive. Not sure about your Sony drive.

Here is a link to another older version from Sonic's web site as well:

http://support.sonic.com/Downloads/files/pxEngine408.exe

And I also found this newer version:

http://www.primeratechnology.com/exe/pxEngine418.exe

Hopefully one of those will allow RecordNow MAX and PrimoDVD to recognize your drive.

Since the installers will not overwrite older versions, I would try installing the v358 version first, reboot, and see if the drive is recognized. If it is, you're done. If not, install the v408 and try that. Again, if that doesn't work, try the next version up.

Good luck!

Oh, incidentally, if you already installed the latest PxEngine and that's why the drive is not being recognized, I saw a post that says to delete these files:

px.dll
pxdrv.dll
pxhpinst.exe
pxmas.dll
pxwave.dll
pxwma.dll
pxhelp20.pnf
pxhelp20.sys
pxhelp20.inf

Reboot, then run the lower version installer again. It will install the earlier version then.
