I also had a problem with my first dru-500a, after several burns it just stopped working. Customer service was no help, spent several HOURS on the phone with them in numerous calls to determine it didn't work. In the end I had to get a replacement, which has been working fine so far.

Here's a link to my post concerning my drive failure. It should have all the info. Good luck.

The early drive appeared to have some spindle motor problems or something like that and some just die, they quit spinning the disks. There is a drive test utility on their support site to test it, it will go through it and say it's fine or not and gather info so you can show it's bad and get a RMA easier.
Mine so far has worked OK, it was made in Jan 03 and is a 500a model.
They were just changing to the AX then so some were A and others were AX. All they had when I saw them were A models so I picked the cleanest box and crossed my fingers.
Anyways that thread pretty much covers the problems that have been occuring.
It does appear that they try to get you a new drive fairly quickly, they don't want every one saying bad things about their best toy.

I finally got (after 2 weeks of waiting) the replacment drive and it is manufactured on 17th of november (older than the previous one-the dead one-which was made on early december)..To tell the truth I expect everything and nothing from this drive..I am disappointed with the idea of waiting to see when the new drive is going to be dead again, after how many burns..But,some times miracles happen so I will wait to see..

It probably has been rebuilt from a previuos RMA drive so it's fine. You still get the same warranty so I wouldn't worry, just use it to death and enjoy the toy. Did they cross ship or did you have to wait to get it after your old one got there.

Guys, thanx for all your replies..the new drive seems to work fine..I burn dvds like crazy now..the local support for the drive in my country was very good..they gave my the replacment drive in less than two weeks..ooh BTW I just received the answer to my problem from sony support via e-mail(after 3 weeks of waiting). It is rediculous..I described the problem of my drive and this was their answer(the answer came after the local support in my country replaced my drive with a new one):

Elias,
Did you follow all the instructions when getting the firmware? Did you
remove the Nero software?
Unfortunately we do not support the Nero or X Copy with our drives. If
you
are having issues with that, then you would need to contact them.
Until you
are using the bundled software you will not get support from us.

Thank you for contacting Sony Technical Support. To better assist you
please
include all previous emails. Please visit our website at
www.sony.com/storagsupport for all the latest software updates.

Thank You
