Some DVD+RW problems ..

Postby momo_evo on Wed Jul 14, 2004 4:39 pm

Hi there all

I was wondering if anyone had the same problem I'm having at the moment.

System config:
DVD Drive: Sony DRU530A with firmware2.0A
OS: Windows XP Pro
Burning SW: Nero 6.3.1 and Sonic RecordNow
Media: Verbatim DVD+RW 2.4x

1) Say I write data to a DVD+RW, then decide to erase it later on, while trying to quick erase it, it'll sometimes take forever to erase, then I eventually have to end task it. When I do a full erase, with Nero (which normally takes about 26 minutes) it even carries on till 40 minutes on 100% but doesn't finish. Then with the same disk, when I put it into the drive again, EVERYTHING freezes and nothing works till I eject the disk.
RecordNow doesn't even want to know anything of that disk .. also just freaks out.
Sometimes Nero/RecordNow completes the erase but when I insert the disk in again ... everything freezes.
This only happens on some disks but only with DVD+RW. I've tried using different media brands but still gives the same hassles with some disks.
Although I haven't tried DVD-RW before.

With 2 of my disks, when I tried to erase it again, it even gave me an error that the disk is not a Re-Writable ... (with Nero AND RecordNow)

When I reboot my box with those disks in, Windows won't boot up till I eject the disk .. then it'll boot normally.

I can't recall if I chose to finalize the session on those problematic disks or not. But surely they should work like CD-RW where you can just close a session and erase it with ease?

It's really becoming a problem cause I've got about 11 of these DVD+RW disks that I can't do anything with .. and these Verbatims don't come that cheap ....

Could it be that those disks are problematic to start off with? (faulty media?)
Could it be my writer doing funny things at times?
Could I be doing something wrong?
Please if anyone can shed some light here ... really appreciate it.

Thank you

Regards

Momo

I got one of those discs with my I/O Magic drive, and it works great. Maybe it's a software issue.

Memo,

I used to have a MSI DR8A drive, which I believe is the same drive as your SONY 530. They are both OEM from a Taiwanese company called AccessTek.

I had similar problems like yours when using the MSI drive on +RW disks (most of them have a Ricoh media code). Plus the writing quality on minus disks is really bad, and I can't play them in my dvd player. Eventually I switched a LG 4082B and all those problems went away. I even manage to repair some of faulty +RW disks produced by MSI drive.

So I think your problem is with the drive, change to another one if possible.

Thanx guys ...

I'm gonna get a second drive soon.
And I was even thinking of getting a DRU700?? .....

Think I'll rather go for another make ... like the LG .. and it costs less than the Sony ....

Thanx again ...

Cheers
