Ring-around-the media

I've got an Optorite DD0401, an 8x DVD burner. When burning Verbatium 4x DVD+R's, the drive will start at 4x, jump to 8x, then drop back down to 4x. Looking at the bottom of the disc, there is a ring in the middle of the disc, right where the drive would have been writing at 8x.

Now...should I be concerned about quality of said disc? I'm burning all of my Verbatium's at 4x now, but have a few burned at "8x".

Oh, the color difference is apparent on the TDK 4x media (which burns fine at 8x) I have as well; the color of the outer 2/3 of the disc is a bit different color. Same for the Ritek 8x, err, *4X*, media. Keep forgetting it's not really 8x. :evil:

Yup! Except with the Verbatiums it doesn't stay at 8x for that long...
EDIT: Let me rephrase that. On SOME discs it doesn't stay at 8x that long - the Verbatiums burn very erratically at 8x on the DD0401. Not the best media for this drive!

Oh well...the TDKs work great! I still haven't tried the 4x Memorex; with my old 4x burner I always used either TDK or Memorex. With my 2.4, I used Verbatiums and Fujis.

Just gotta find what it likes :)

I do wish it was a bit faster, though. The Plex is 6x-8x. But then, the Plex doesn't have HD-BURN :wink:

Last time I saw visible zones it was a very bad sign.(Was a Acer 24x recorder)
Comparring it to the Bler Mapping you could see the same different zones.
So the different zones showed a higher error rate form the inside to the outside.
I also have seen a disc with clear visible zones from a Lite On 24102B
the only real difference here was slightly higher jitter in the outer zones.

Now from my experiences with cd-r's with clearly visible zones I would say this is not a good thing ! It might in fact be quite bad.
So try to avoid them if you can.

Well when they used zclv for cdr's all of my disks looked that way but the quality was fine so you might be OK becuase the new dvd burners do the same thing. However slowing back down instead of speeding up in steps is not a good sign. it didn't like the media all of a sudden. I'd test the quality and just try them in whatever your going to use them in and make sure they work OK.
I'm still figuring out my new 811 and it's been doing some funky things also. I think I finally got the hardware and software to the point I can get some good burns out of it instead of coasters.

What discs I have left I'll burn at 4x-it's obvious the drive just doesn't like them. But hey, even the Plextor PX-708 has trouble with writting at 8x on some disks.

But even on the "good" media-Ritek & TDK - there is a color difference where the drive went from 4x to 8x.

Anyone with a Plexy 708 notice the same thing? I know it's got a bit better write quality than my drive...

If anything goes well I will receive more info about the Optorite and the zone appearance in a couple of weeks.

About the plextor 708 the disc's that I have seen that went all the way diidn't show a clear differences in writing zones.

About 4x media not being able to write at 8x. Well it was made as 4x if some drives can burn it faster then it's fine(if the quality won't go much down that is) but don't expect 4x media to burn at 8x.

It is quite nice from drive manufacturers like Optorite, Plextor, Lite On that they came with this feature. Still it's outside the standards and it is pushing some media to the maximum so don't blame the 4x media if it actually fails to perform at 8x.

Well, I don't "blame" the media...much :)

As for the rings, they can be hard to see, depending on the lighting. I can't see them in my bedroom, but can in my living room...

Those rings can be bloody evil at times. Try updating to 1.04. Word on the forums is that there is quite a bit of improvement in the firmware.
