Problem with 708A

Postby fishy9 on Wed Sep 10, 2003 1:26 am

I am trying to burn some video dvds with the Plextor 708a and I have been running into a problem. The videos I have been burning freeze in powerdvd and the roxio dvd about 20-30 minutes into the movie. I am using Nero 6.0.0.11 and Memorex DVD+R 4X media. I tried burning the media at 4X and 8X and it was the same result. The same movie burned with my HP 200e works just fine, same situation. Could this be a problem with the Memorex media? Also, I bought a Coolmax external enclosure and I put the 708a in it. When I burned the dvd at 8X with it took over a half an hour. Then after I changed it back to internal it worked just fine. I am kind of lost about what to do here but I think I may have a bad plextor drive on my hands.

use the search function to find more threads discussing px-708a problems. there seems to be a common problem with nero 6. try the latest version of nero 5.5 and see if the problem is recreated.

I think some batches of media might have issues, and some versions of Nero 6 have problems.

I use 6.0.0.11 with my 708A and haven't had a single issue (using 'Video DVD' compilation), so it could be your media.

Maybe it is a software conflict or hardware conflict...

e.g. Easy CD/DVD 6 hangs on my PC, even though I am sure it works for most people, which is probably some software conflict...

And your USB problem is explained pretty easy.. When you connect your drive to an external enclosure the computer has to be fast enough to supply the drive with enough data. USB 1.1 will never work since this technique is far too limited. But I think you're using USB 2.0 and can still cause problems since when the drive is recording at 8x it needs more than 10MB/s, which is only achieveabe with really fast computers and a very good set-up. On my AMD 2100+ system I already run into problems when I want to record a disc at 48x CD-R (7MB/s roughly)..

Is DMA enabled? Check the CDRLabs FAQ forum for information on how to enable it. You should definitely have it enabled.

I just saw a patch for Nero 6.0.0.15 named Nero6Patch.exe.zip posted on

Code: Select all
http://www.cdrsoft.cc/index3.html

Apparently it fixes the compilation problems, which kept Nero from burning a compilation with an error message, and not enough space on the media even though there was enough space.

I'm not sure if it fixes any problems with our Plextor PX-708A that have been addressed here but I will run some tests this weekend and see what happens :(

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager.

2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only." If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

• Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.
• Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

My problem...

Postby drakus on Sat Sep 13, 2003 4:30 pm

Ok so I could burn at 8x with no problem and had no errors using TDK media. But when I played the movies in some parts it had small gaps; I would rewind and playback again and it would play fine sometimes. Also the recorder buffer during the 8x recording mode did not stay at a constant percent. When I did record the movie at 4x I did not have this problems and the movie played perfectly and the buffer was always at 91% Any ideas? could this be media or just my Panasonic DVD player?

Which Panasonic DVD player are you using? I've used the DVD-RP62, DVD-RV32, DVD-XP30, and the DVD-S55S without any problems so maybe it's a media issue :(

Its a Panasonic DVD-RV31, the thing is that when recorded at 4x it works perfectly.
