Pioneer DVD-106 read problems. any help would be appreciated

Postby Evissam on Wed Jan 28, 2004 7:05 pm

Hello all, I currently have a Pioneer DVD-106 or 106S drive, (not sure which one though, but according to driveinfo.exe, it states DVD-106). The problem I am having is reading certain dvd discs. I'm not sure if my dvd-rom 106 can read all dvd's, especially recent dvd's such as SWAT etc. I have no issues reading dvdr backups or old dvd's such as Starship Troopers etc. I tried upgrading the firmware of the drive, took off the region protection, but to no avail.

My questions to all is: Is my drive broken? or Is my drive not compatiable with the current dvd discs for playback? (I would think it should be able to read fine since the drive can read 16x playback).... or other? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.... =)

I found that my newer drives worked okay for the newer movies.

It could be a number of things. Such as something running in the background that interrupts the DVD playback [i.e. like a screen saver].

Or the brand of DVD software [or hardware decoder card] that you are using.

Or how your DVD player is hooked up. I had some issues with one of my players. Once I put it on Primary Master [from secondary master] all my problems just went away.

I didn't have any problems viewing S.W.A.T. [region 1] on my old Toshiba which is a few years older than your Pioneer.

I'm not sure it could be a "broken drive" b/c you mentioned it is able to read DVD recordable media.
