Confusion over minor Incremental Drive Anouncements

Postby BMR on Fri Jan 09, 2004 12:02 pm

Lg just introduced the GSA-4081 and now are bringing in the GSA-4082.
Liteon just changed the 811s to the 851s and now have introduced the 812s.
Optorite has just anounced an unamed successor to the DD0401.

In all three cases, the ultimate goal is to have an 8X plus minus R and a 4X plus minus RW.

What gives ??

Confusion for the masses ??

Ads confusion to people and a tendecy, for some, to have the latest models and new improvments and so increase of sales and also profits.

In Lite On case I know that they change the model because they had to change some components on the burner (i think it where some components on the laser or burning heads)

The Lg was something with a slight improvement on -r/rw i think, but i remember that Ian sopke about it...

well, that's what you get when people want to burn DVDs at 8x when there's no such thing as 8x DVD !

If you have more specific info on the actual hardware changes or practical performance improvements (or downgrades) regarding the drives mentions, please chime in.

I'm also seriously considering both Optorite (for measurements only) and LiteOn (mainly for measurements), but would like to know about differences between the models.

Do a search on the forum and you'll find the info you're looking for.
Anyway you can "drive" to RPC1 and check the forum section and while you're there also do a search.

You'l get the info you need and the one you don't need.

Noua, thanks for the tip. I do know how to use search (and have used it) :)

Search with any combination of [GSA-]4802 [AND] [GSA-]4801 or [SOHW-]812S [AND] 811S and you come up with nothing. I know, because I've tried.

Now, if you know (really know) what are the differences between the aforementioned models, please divulge your secret keyring decoded information with the rest of us :)

cheers,

Probably just that these companies rushed the 8x + drives out (and probably cut a few corners here and there), hence the reason why they need to run a slightly modified line for the - support.

Although, given that it is now clear that 4x MCC -R media works happily at 8x, you have to wonder why they couldn't have released these sooner.

2 things
1 the fact that 8x is not standardized yet this is were most drive manufacturers are waiting for.
2 The fact that only 2 manufacturers so far can make there 4x media up to a consistant quality level and are willing to support the posibilitiy of overclocking of the media very much !
