remember,the disc your reading from should be at least double the speed than the burner.For example,if your cd reader reads at 32x you want your burner to read at 16x.Or if your reader reads at 48x,try 24x for the burner.This is so there is less chance for buffer underruns.It took me only a few minutes and about 5 coasters to find what was wrong a couple of years ago.I haven't had a coaster since.Just 'cause it says that it can handle 48x,doesn't mean it can.Stick to a safe coaster-free speed.

Yesterday I burned a Vermatim (Mitsubishi Chem.) CDR @16x and another @48x on one of my LiteOn 52x drives, then checked with CD-Speed, the disc burned @16x has more c1 errors and 1 c2 error.

My CDRW combo on the Mac writes @24x and make more c1 on the same Verbatim media. Also my Pioneer DVD burner makes more c1 than my LiteOns.

Rare is than one of the LiteOns make more cq han the other, I thought the external firewirw case is something to do with this, but last week I tested both drives changing one for the other and viceversa, same results, firewire case has nothing to do with more c1 errors.

The difference in c1 errors are about 1000-2000 total in a 700 MB burn.

to always burn media at one speed notch lower than it's rated speed.
also at one speed notch lower than the drive's top rated speed.

i got a 52x speed writer and if i got 48-52x media i still burn at 32x. theres no point in going faster than 32x since u will only save 30-40 seconds and the burns are more reliable at 32x. c1 is also lower. i would burn at 40x but over a full 79:59 min disc i only save 10 seconds between 40x and 32x. so its not worth it imo.

haha aren't i a comedian, with my plextor premium, i burn audio at 24x and everything else at 52x

i always use Fuji TY 52x discs


wow i just noticed i still have my Yamaha cd-rw drive in my sig, i haven't used that thing in about 6 months, course i mostly burn dvd-rs, i only burn cd-rs about once every 2 weeks

I'm in the same boat. But sometimes I'll go right to 52x just to see how the audio CD's turn out.

Funny, I've gotten as high as 67.9x now... but never as high as 82x...of course if I ever did, I probably wouldn't have a CD burner any more either!

I burn everything as fast as it can go and make a clean copy after I test it. That means 52x with every media that will burn clean, and 8x with dvd's.
That's why I bought these fast burners, if I wanted to do 4, 8, or 16 I would have kept those old burners. Time has gotten more important as I've been doing these since 98 and quad was painfull. I have a friend who got a Ricoh/turtle beach 1420? that was 2x back about 97 when that was fast and they were 500 bucks. That was real hard to wait for, especially when media was 10 bucks a pop and he made 3 coasters right off the bat.

I burn at the fastest speed supported by my drive unless the media can't handle it. I do test discs occasionally, but I certainly don't test every disc I burn.

i have a liteon 52246s burn everything at 52x on 48x rated verbatim discs, they come in a 25 pack with 5 different colours and cases to match, and are made in taiwan, DatalifePlus Colors are their name, and they burn better for me at 52x than the 50 spindle of 52x rated DataLifePlus

last time i tested burn quality (i use to test heaps)i had 200 c1 errors total and never any c1 errors, testing done in a creative pc-dvd 16x (dunno the model) but looks extreamly simelar to a 16x liteon(rebaged?)

For the people with the Lite On burners keep in mind that Lite On and the media manufacturers optimised the drive mostly for high burning speeds when it comes to C1/C2/CU errors.
So it's not weird that you find less errors on higher speed burned disc's which were burned by these drives. If you take a closer look jitter and some other things it looks like 16x-24x is most times the best speeds for these drives. ABove will cause higher jitter. Lower will cause most times more errors.
Now Some people might find this is quite weird since high jitter will lead to C2 errors. However keep in mind that Lite On drives are quite tollerant readers for high jitter. So they will not have problems with it. But most older players and consumer players will.
That's also one of the main disadadvantages of any modern cd-writer based quality analyzing tool.

What always drives me crazy is people who tell me they always buy the fastest certified media they can, and burn it at 1x on their really REALLY old CD Burner, "so that they can get the best quality" .....argh!

Oh sure, put your HD in defragmetation at the time of burning, a lot of buffer underrun pauses can set that average speed

I burn at 104x. I take my CDs to the Goodyear Tire Store and have them spin balanced at 10,000 RPM. I plug my surge suppressor into the 220 Volt line (normally for my electric clothes dryer) and everything goes twice as fast.
