Should I be worried? Plextor 708A coasters!?

Postby minchin on Sat Dec 27, 2003 11:40 pm

Just burnt 2 DVD+R coaster with 708A. Just got it for less than a months. This is the first time I am burning a whole bunch of discs one after another.
I am using Memorex 4X media, which burnt at 8X with no problem before. After 2 successful disc, on the 3rd one, I encountered a fixation error when closing the disc I think. So I thought:"well, one coaster, nothing to be alarm about". The 4th disc, a marked slow down in the burning speed, 14+min (about 4x speed I think)... then the same fixation error.
Do I have a defective drive now? How likely is this related to the batch of media that I have... (it is in the same 25pack spindle)? How many continuous burn do you do with your 708A? Do u pause between burn for the eletronics to cool down?

I had similar problems with Memorex media. It's the media, try and get some TDK or Verbatim disks, those worked like a charm for me.

I've used memorex at 2.4x and 4x and have no probs whatsoever.
I like memorex but I'd like to have some Verbatims.Just can't afford em'.
The error does sound like the media though.

Thank God... while Plextor's service is probably good, it is good to know that I don't have to go through it.
I have found some TDK 100Pk at Best Buy for about $189 without rebates. I know these are not the best prices around. However, these are all made in Taiwan. Are these RICOH stuff?
Does any of the good MCC002/003 and RICOH coded disc come from Taiwan?

I believe all the MCC disks are Made In Singapore, I know the RICOHJPNR01 disks are made in taiwan, which are what my Fuji are, and my past TDK and Memorex. Don't be discouraged by the same media code though, the disks are quite different in quality.

What is the most number of disc you have burn in succession at 8X? I am wondering if overheating could be source of my problem.....

So what you mean is that even though all the disc might have RICOHJPNR01, the TDK is higher quality than Memorex right?

I guess I better stick to TDK in the future.... after I burn through these 100+ memorex... (it is on sale so often that I bought a whole bunch of the 25pks).... : <

Just one, I normally don't have anything to burn more than one copy of.

Correct

If the memorex and the and the TDK both have the same RICOHJPNR01 code on them, then are they not the same disk made by the same company???? ( ie. RICOH ) or, are you saying that RICOH makes crappier versions of the same disk with the same code for various companies to rebadge??

In the US at least, the RICOHJPNR01 disks are made by Ritek. Ritek has been known to make many different grades of media quality, so it is likely that Memorex bought the cheaper, less reliable batch. I am pretty sure that the above statement is correct, but if it's not, I can tell you for sure 100% that the TDK disks are simply much better than the Memorex ones.

TDK buys the highest factory grade when it comes to Ritek(ricoh) media. Also TDK does extra tests themselves for quality controle on all disc's bought from third parties like Ricoh,Ritek,TY !
What Memorex buys is unknown to me.

I agree with aviationwiz to use other brands of media. I just picked up 2 (15) packs of Verbatim DVD-R 1-2x speed at Office Depot for $31.07. It's a buy one 15 pack get one free. Also got from PC CLUB a 25 pack of RITEK 4x DVD-R for $21.46. :D They have a special going on right now. The media is actually listed as GENERIC.
