Opps, broke WinXP's search feature!

Postby BurninMan921 on Wed Dec 24, 2003 9:55 pm

...but I can't figure out exactly what I did. After installing XP, I ran XPLite to remove Outlook, MSN Explorer, and some of the other Windows junk - including that stupid dog.

But now all searchs come up empty...even *.*.

I tried reinstalling the stupid dog, still the same thing, so that's not it. Indexing service is enabled. The only services I have disabled are Messanger, Diskeeper, and a couple of non-critcal ones.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe I killed something w/XPLite that helps/does the searchs but isn't named as such?

In XPLite Check these options:

Operating System Options: Search Assistant
Server Components: Indexing Service + Language Resources

Unlike Linux, XP is not well receptive to tweaking. Good Luck.

(You like Mandrake? My fave too, only reason I stay away from SuSE is they don't offer free downloads).

OT: Checkout this site http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
(Only after you are sure no other problems exist in your system).

Thanks for the info; I'll try it and see what happens :)

Gotta love Blackviper's site...The ultimate WinXP service resource!

SuSE may not offer free downloads, but others do offer downloads for SuSE.
SuSE is still Linux, and thus free - they don't have anything in it about not posting it else where. I got mine off of the usenet; but I've seen quite a few FTP servers w/it. Check out the SuSE section at www.linuxiso.org's forums...

Have you tried Mandrake 9.2 yet? I have it sitting here but still haven't gotten around to trying it. I do need to install Linux soon; it's my next major project...

Edit:

Still no search :(
All of it's enabled. Argh! Oh well...gives me an excuse to install Linux! :)
Not that the 52,394 crashes/day aren't reason enough...or the fact that it's Microsoft...or ....

I have always had dual boot (from RH 7 or 6.x days). Unofortunately I have not been able to allocate much time for Linux lately. I downloaded 3 ISO images of Mandrake 9.2 but couldn't check it yet. I like Mandrake (the OS and the company) becuase they try to do a living in the real Open Source way. You know, many fear that RH will become MS in the future and only more powerful becuase of Linux's potential...

Btw, what about Debian? AFAIK it's very popular with SysAdmins because it's must be the flavour with least amount of copyrighted components included. But for home use, nothing can beat Mandrake.

Let us know how your tweaking goes and good luck.

I have Debian, but haven't tried it yet...never was too impressed with text-based installers. If I have to go the text based route, I'd 100% go with GenToo. Actually, if I had the time to set it up, I'd go with Gentoo anyway.

Server wise, I think there is only one choice: FreeBSD.

Now that I think about it, I have alot of Linux's I haven't tried/don't use:
SuSE 9 Pro DVD
SuSE 9 Pro CD
SuSE 9 FTP Installer
SuSE 9 "Live" CD
Mandrake 9.1
Mandrake 9.2
Gentoo
FreeBSD
Redhat 9
Lycoris
Knoppix Linux - A live Debian that doesn't like my machine-another reason I haven't used Debian.
Debian - 8 freaking CD's!
Xandros Linux
Lindows v4
QNX
ReactOS

Ok, so the last two aren't Linux. But I can't wait for the day I can use ReactOS instead of Windows!!
For those that don't know, ReactOS is a work-in-progress OS that aims to be a fully opensource, Windows compatable OS - yup, a FREE Windows!
It's in very, very early alpha right now. I think it can run the calculator, and maybe solitaire...

Geez, add in WinXP, Win2K, and Win98 and I have quite a few OS's!!

Guys, don't forget Minesweeper! Where would Windows be without Minesweepr?
