Best portable DVD burner?

Postby TeknoJnky on Mon Dec 08, 2003 1:18 pm

Hi all,

Just recently started doing research on various DVD burners, but haven't seemed to find one with all the stuff i want..

Portable (preferably with rechargable battery supply)
Play MP3's from dvd or cd-rom disks
Can read damaged disks well
Firewire connect
Able to read/write most or all formats.
Shock/skip buffer memory
Analog/mic inputs for recording on the go

Besides the features above, any other suggested features or any specific burners can anyone recommend or has experience with?

Thanks for any replies!

Ya, I been googling all day... found a few different reviews on it, mostly said the same thing..

relativly slow burner, plastic construction easy to break, low battery life (1.5 hours), etc..

I emailed qps for details on some questions I had..

Apparently there are 2 different models, a dvd+rw and dvd-rw... the mp3 playback is supported only on cd, not DVD :( and wont backup dvd movies with the included software... but on a positive note the player can run off the 1394 power when plugged into the computer and has a decent antishock buffer.

I think if the price dropped 200-250 I would buy one in a heart beat, but I can't justfy 400-500 when I can buy a normal internal/external dvd burner and a portable dvd player for way less.

It's too bad, it has almost exactly the features I wanted. :(

Can I put an internal DVD burner into an external enclosure and connect via USB 2.0/IEEE 1394? That will make it a portable DVD burner

You can put one into an external enclosure.
Doing this it'll be larger and heavier than the portable designed ones.
You'll also need acess to an AC outlet to be able to use it.
To get an idea on size this one measures 10L x 2H x 6 1/3W (measured in inches).

Well, more accurately that will make it an "external" drive.

Portable, in the context I am interested in, is more of a self contained device and much more compact than slapping an internal drive into a usp/firewire box.

Which, for now, is what I have gone ahead and ordered...

Hopefully someday more products similar to the Que!007 will come out at a better price point and better design/construction.

I'm just wondering how is the performance of such "external"/portable drive? Is the USB 2.0/IEEE 1394 fast enough for DVD burning?

when i copy data from external USB 2.0 case (maxtor 40gb ata 100 @7200 RPM)
it has transfer of 16-18 mb per second.

I burnt several DVDs also from that drive at 4× (5,5 mb/s)

It seems that is possible (even at 8×) 8)

Got my dvd burner the other day... external usb2/firewire pioneer 106..

You can indeed burn at 4x, at least from firewire connection.

Since I am burning from a laptop, the hard drive is not exactly the fastest and can barely keep up with the xfer rate while trying to do my normal work. Haven't had a coaster yet even on 4x, but most times that I am trying to stay productive, I just burn at 2x..

I have no problem burning at 4x with my A06 in an external enclosure with Firewire/USB2.0.

Well, I only tested the Firewire with PC and Mac. I'll try later with the USB2.0

Also, I tested a 133 ATA HD with an average of 27-29 MB/s.

I saw listed an external enclosure for 150 SATA drives with one of the distributors I work with. I wonder how fast it would transfer.
Ciao,
