All the new CD/DVD Drives: so what!?!

Postby BurninMan921 on Thu Dec 18, 2003 7:10 pm

Sigh. I remember actually getting exicted over a new drive being released; I knew I was about to be "wowed" by faster writing or some new feature. But now? Nope. All the drives are exactly the same. Teac has a new 8x burner. 8x4x12 DVD, 40x24x40 CD. Sound familar? Just about EVERY other 8x DVD burner has the exact same specs.

I don't bother with drive reviews anymore; I just grab one from whichever manufacture I happen to "like" the best (read: Plextor. And yeah, I have an Optorite-but it does have something no one else does-HD-BURN).

To all manufactures:
Come on, lets at least see 48x CD-R, 16x DVD-ROM, or SOMETHING to set your drive apart from the rest!

If I was an average, joe-blow consumer, and I walked into a store and saw
6 or 7 DVD drives that all had the same specs, I think I'd just get the cheapest drive-what ever's on sale.

What about you guys? Tried of the "cut-and-paste" product announcements, where all they change is their name and the model number?

Ok, I feel better now...

I gotta agree, very few are different from each other. Although I am VERY happy with my 4x DVD+R/-R and 4x DVD+RW (and 2x DVD-RW) LiteON LDW-411s. It isn't THAT common for a 4x DVD-R/+R burner to also burn +RWs at 4x.

Yeah, 4x +RW's rock! Now how about some 8x +RW's?

I'll get excited when dual layer DVD writers are available.

Ditto! But I'd be happier with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray or whatever. I could use the 25+GB/disc.

I could care less about dual layered DVDs for the moment. I mean, I'm happy they are coming out, but I have zero expectations for them to work properly. I think the first two or three generations of media and burners will be spent fixing the bugs! It is fairly obvious that both Philips and Pioneer are rushing this technology, and that is not very conducive to a good product. On the other hand, I'd be completely exstatic if I am wrong! :D

I know some of you guys have more, but already I am having trouble justifying the number of drives I own (3 Liteys, 3 LGs and a Samsung). So It's possible I might go for a high speed DVD writer when released but regardless of that, I will not buy any drives for some time.

(Still I might change my mind if 708 price falls. :o )

Cheers.

And in my soul am free,

Enjoy such liberty. - Richard Lovelace

I currently have 4 CD/DVD writers on hand, and one (Yamaha CRW-F1) that is due to arrive any day now.... and I plan on buying a new DVD burner within the first two months of the new year... and I also plan to buy a new CD burner every month.

The only thing that holds me back right now from buying more is I have to buy a new computer to store them in before I can add any more IDE devices!! :P

I think I'm developing an addiction to collecting optical disc writing drives! LOL!

Yup, I think I had the same addiction! I haven't been buying many lately, though, because CD-RW drives haven't changed much, and DVD+/-RW drives still cost too much for me to be constantly upgrading. :)

Well, I don't have too many drives: A 166S for ripping (CDs & DVD's), an Optorite DVD burner (mostly for data backups-hence the Optorite since it has HD-BURN), and a Litey 52x32x52 drive - to save some wear and tear on my DVD burner when making audio discs.

Any I 100% agree with NoSmartz; the drives are gonna rock, the media price is gonna suck!
