Purchasing a DVD burner w/new computer,,how's this...NEC 130

Postby coadman on Tue Dec 16, 2003 11:42 am

I've been looking at differant computers for a few weeks, both on and off the internet. I found a person in my state that builds them out of his small shop. I gave him the "minimum requirements" I wanted, and one of them was a DVD burner. I had listed the Pioneer 106D/A06 on my list of specifications, but told him to feel free to swap components as he felt, as long as they were high quality. He came back with a price list ,and had substituted the NEC 1300A 4X DVD±R/±RW , for the Pioneer. It may be the fact he has them on hand, I dont know, and havent talked to him since he sent the email. What type of burner is the NEC, and should I stick with my Pioneer 106 selection?
thanks,

In my opion only settle for the NEC-1300 if it is considerably cheaper. If not, stick with the Pioneer 106. The Pioneer wins hands down considering it's writing quality on different media. Check out the review on the TDK 440 http://cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=198, it's a rebaded NEC. For the Pioneer, see the Memorex http://cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=205 and Asus http://cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=207 reviews.

Good luck :D .

How about the LiteOn 411S?

Since it is on sale at Best Buy, would it be a better option than the NEC?

Yes, the Lite-On would be the better choice cmpared to the NEC. But be sure you burn DVD+ media on this one. DVD- compatibility is still weak on the Lite-On.

Here's the system he was pricing me...

Postby coadman on Tue Dec 16, 2003 4:51 pm

Asus P4P8X motherboard, P4
2.66/533 CPU, 512 MB of PC2700 dual-channel memory, 80 GB 7200 RPM Ultra
ATA100 HDD, nVidia GeForce 5200 128 MB DDR AGP 8X video card, onboard AD1985
Dolby 5.1 audio with S/PDIF digital output, onboard 3Com 10/100/1000 GbE
NIC, NEC 1300A 4X DVD±R/±RW drive with CD/DVD authoring software, US
Robotics V.92 56K data/fax PCI modem, floppy drive, keyboard/optical mouse
and Windows XP Home (installed) it's $940.00 shipped

(Black & silver mid-tower case with 350-watt ATX12V power supply. Side window, blue LED lights on the side fan and front panel. Three open 5.25" visible drive bays, one open 3.5" visible bay and three open 3.5" hidden drive bays for expansion. The case is also available in yellow, blue, beige, silver and green)

Anything I should question him on, about these components? I think I'll have him swap out the NEC for the Pioneer(It will cost $20 more),or I could trot down to Best Buy for the LiteOn and save $60(would just have to wait for the rebates to come). Any opinions?
thanks,
coadman
