Ritek 8x DVD+R Media Screwup

Postby Ian on Mon Dec 15, 2003 8:57 pm

If you ordered some Ritek 8x DVD+R media from Meritline, you might be a little surprised. Here are the discs I recieved:

Image

As you can see, they're ID'd as RICOHJPNR01. These are 4x DVD+R discs. However, the ID on the jewel case is "104-036-001" the same one as on Meritline's website:

http://www.meritline.com/ritek-dvd-plus ... -case.html

I have a feeling someone screwed up somewhere and labled some Ricoh discs incorrectly. Just be aware of this if you buy some of these discs.

If you're curious, I used a Sony DRU-530A to get this info. This is one of the drives listed as supporting this media on Meritline's website.

what do you mean "supporting"? burning at 8x?
does it indeed work at 8x?

how about on other drives - plex? liteon 811? optorite?

I also checked them in a New Tech drive, and the ID was the same "RICOHJPNR01".

The Sony DRU-530A won't write to these discs at 8x. However, drives that can write to 4x Ricoh discs can write to these at 8x.

Meritline hasn't gotten back to me yet. As soon as I find out more, I'll let you know. I have a feeling they screwed up and sent the wrong discs.

Mine (which I got last friday but just opened up) ID as:
Manufacturer : Ricoh
Code : RICOHJPN R01
Disc Type : DVD+R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : 2.4 X - 8 X
Capacity : 4.38 GB
4700375040 Bytes
Additional Capacity : -
Overburn Capacity : -

This is with Nero CD-Speed 2.11 & Optorite DD0401.

Just because *some* burners can burn the 4x discs at 8x does not mean they can call the 4x's 8x's and charge a premium for them!!

Meritline just lost me as customer. I'll get my TY's elsewhere.

No kidding. They're not even Ritek's in the first place!

btw.. you can leave your feedback in their forum. I've already started a thread about these discs:

Unmm, yes they are Ritek's. Just because they have Ricoh's code doesn't mean they weren't made by Ritek. Ritek makes a lot of Ricoh's media.

And besides, the company I work for just purchased several thousand Ritek DVDs from Ritek directly, and all the DVD+Rs carried a Ricoh Media ID code.

Ah.. thanks for that info dolph. It still doesn't explain why they don't work at 8x though.

Agreed! Meritline is probably doing the old, "if we can burn it at 8x, then we should sell it as 8x" routine... Perhaps I will inform my contact at Ritek and let him know the potential harm towards Ritek's name that could be caused by this.

According to them, Ritek sold them these disks for 8x, and charged 8x pricing.

The disc you got is Ritek 8X dvd+r, that means, Ritek sold to us as 8x media and we paid 8x media price to get that.

Personally, I don't know if to believe that Ritek made a major screw-up on thier end, or if Meritline made a major screw up.

Has meritline offered any compensation to anyone?

No. I contacted their return people, demanding a resolution and/or my money back and I got this:

Dear Ian,

Would you please contact our tech department for some suggestion before returning? You can contact John at John@comptree.net or at 626-369-8832 ext. 122. Many thanks in advance.

Yours sincerely,
kathy

I emailed John last night and have not gotten a reply from him nor has Michael from Meritline replied to my last post on their forum. Meritline has done me well in the past, but they're not doing too well this time around.

Okay, I've talked with Ritek concerning this issue, and they are looking into it. If the wrong stock was shipped, then I'm sure that Ritek will make appropriate compensation.

I'll let you guys know when/if I learn more.

Hmm...so this might not be Meritlines fault? Guess I'll watch this a bit more closely. And if Ritek IS trying to hawk 4x discs at 8x, well...then I've got to find some new DVDs.

Ritek DOES have REAL 8x DVD+Rs. I've seen them (or scans of them). There were some mistakes made though.

Yeah, I have a feeling they shipped out the wrong media to resellers or something.

Scans say nothing about availability in real stores.
If scans do count then verbatim 32x cd-rw's are all over the place.
It's true some stores got test samples for that one but no store so far seems to have real amounts of them. (Which will be there in Januari according to verbatim Germany !)
:D Also if that counts then dual layer disc's are there !!
Ritek has got the disc's that's true. The question is do the stores have them allready and I think we can answer that one still with a NO! unless someone got the real disc's.

I hope they shipped out the wrong media by mistake.
If that isn't the case and they really intended to sell the 4X media as 8X, then I feel it isn't right: these 4X discs shouldn't be sold as 8X media; they should be sold as '4X media capable of being burned at 8X with most 8X burners'.

I mean I bought 4X Memorex +R for under $1 a piece with the EXACT same media ID as the so-called 8X media, so why would I pay more than double that for essentially the same discs.

The Memorex burn fine at 8X, and play back without ANY problems, including on my new portable DVD player (St Nicholas gift from my gf).
