I have no idea. I don't seriously think there is any connection. It was probably just because South Korea is more protected than most other East Asian countries. It is also true that
some nationalistic South Koreans like to say how superior kimchi is over Japanese-invented yogurt.
Samsung, LG, and other major consumer electronics giants in South Korea take kimchi refrigerator market very seriously because of profit potential. Most latest units cost nearly US$1000 each and newly married couples always buy them. It's a fresh phenomenon in South Korean electronics market and something only feasible in South Korea. But mine costs just 230,000 won or a little under US$200.
I don't know much about pregnancy but my wife seems to be happy just with kimchi and me.
