help installing TDK840g--with CSEL

Hi all, MY system uses a csel cd-rom drive and when I set the jumper on the tdk drive to csel and try and boot up my system:

first of all it takes a very long time to boot up,
the lights on each drive come on during boot up, so I know I got power,

both drive trays will open and close by the button

Neither drive is recognized in 'my computer' and 'add new hardware' finds
neither drive either

Neither drive will play anything

Any clues as to whats going on??!!
Thanks.

Try setting the TDK drive to "Master" and the CD-ROM drive to "Slave".

Edit: fixed mistake.

Try setting the CD-RW drive to "Master" and the CD-ROM drive to "Slave".

my TDK is a DVD drive, and IF i have a master/slave set-up to set it up as the master

will it hurt anything by doing(trying) this!! being I have CSEL type currently?

Yes, it will be fine to set up the TDK drive as master and the other drive as slave. You won't hurt anything at all by trying this.

i will never understand why people use CSEL to begin with, like its that hard to just put one as master and one as slave

I think selecting CSEL is not done by the users but by the system manufacturers. All the major system manufacturers use CSEL by default for their IDE devices.

@hhp211,
As said before, you will not damage anything by changing to Master/Slave from CSEL. In fact one could argue that this will increase performance. Make sure you select one drive as master and the other as slave. Also don't forget to double check your cables / connections as a precaution.

Good Luck.

I always change the jumpers to the Master/Slave settings, too.

ok first of all I got it working :D :D

second as much as I do know about computers I'm still learning everyday. :D

third the instructions say if its set CSEL to use CSEL and I thought that was the way I had it, but the instruction page picture that shows the jumper settings is not entirely correct as there are 4 jumper settings and not the 3 they show you in the picture.
one of them is a DMA jumper [ anybody know what this is used for? ] and the other 3 are the CSEL/Slave/Master and the master already had a jumper on it and there was one more in the bag-o-goodies. so...
...I just looked at the pictures and assumed I only had 3 available settings that they were showing me
[ and we all know what assuming will do... ]

well, First I had a jumper on master and one on slave [ thinking I just had it setup as master ], then I had a jumper on DMA and Master [ thinking I had just CSEL ] and that is why it didn't work. DOH!! :o
It clearly shows it stamped in the metal part of the drive, I just didn't look at it. Its kind of bad on TDK for not showing that in the picture, but oh well.

anyway... I now have it set to master/slave and its up and going.

I guess I can assume [again] that I can set my 2nd hard drive up as a master/slave setup and it work and have better performance too??

.
If I haven't said it before I'll say it now: THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE for all the knowledge and help you have given me :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The DMA jumper is used generally when you have a compatibility issue with the I/O controller. Using the jumper sets it to multi-word DMA or PIO-4 at 16MB/sec. Too slow for optimum performance, but a fix if your system won't stay in UDMA or you have some other problem.

If your system has a cable select cable, you want to use CSEL. If you have a standard 40 conductor cable, you need one device at master and the other at slave so there is no conflict. A CSEL cable is usually marked as such and has the connectors color coded.

not accurate.
if you have a cable select cable, you can use cable select. but you don't have to. if you'd want to is another matter altoghether.

sometime cable select doesn't work nicely and weird problems...just set the master/slave settings yourself, no problem.
