List rebadged DVD burners

Postby ruderacer on Thu Dec 11, 2003 4:51 pm

Maybe a stupid question, but is there a list of the OEM DVD burners and their rebadged counterparts and what would be the benefit of choosing one over the other?

Im not sure about a list but your only real advantage in buying a rebadged burner might be price. Firmware support will always be better from the original manufacturer since you will get the updates first. Tech support should also be better from the original manufacturer since they built the damn things and have access to the original engineers that difficult questions/problems can be escalted to. The other companies are a step down the chain, if thier tech support cant help you then they have to wait for the OEM to come up with an answer.

All of my Buslink drives have used the LiteOn firmware directly and even ID as LiteOn drives. So some will just take the firmware no problems, some need a small hack to work but as far as I know most will take it one way or the other.
I bought Buslink drives becuase BB had them in stock for a OK price, couldn't find a real LiteOn drive locally at that point.

And in another case, your TDK (Plextor) drive, you are stuck using the TDK firmware, not the Plextor firmware. Now TDK is caught up, but they were behind for a while.
