411s dvd-r problems

Postby kevincott on Sun Nov 30, 2003 8:54 pm

I am having problems w/ liteon 411s.

I have installed it in an external enclosure and it seems to only want to write to dvd+r/rw media.

I have piles of dvd-r media and wish to use as advertised.

Widows XP recognizes the media and says it unused under properties but burnatonce does not seem to write to the 411s. I have used burnatonce with great success in my laptop.

I have checked some previous entries and find no similar problems on this forum.

Any help?

burnatonce DVD burning is "experimental" and doesn't always work.
in any case burnatonce only officially supports -R/W, not +R/W.
it sometimes works with +R/W, you have to install another program (Pro-DVD), more details in the FAQ there, but it's not officially supported. but also -R/W is problematic on some drives.

try using some other burning program.

I also have Xcopy platinum, which is not working with my 411s and dvd-r media.

I am using fuji and bmi media.

It is reading my new media as 0 bytes free during the write process.

Have you installed the update to firmware version FS0F?

I am now seeing that the drive does not even burn to the LiteOn supplied +R/RW discs, meaning that it does not write to any format!

It does read DVDs as it should. I have played The Matrix off of the 411S.

Well, if your drive won't burn any discs at all, it's probably dead (assuming that you're using software that properly supports the drive).

Besides burnatonce I have repeatedly tried DVD XCopy Platinum to no success.

If no reply comes from LiteOn I will return the drive.

Thanks.

i noticed that too. my drive can't recognise the blank discs included in the package although it does seem to burn cds fine, and dvds play okay too. i dunno if i have a faulty drive since i only got it yesterday. but i'm already thinking of returning it to the store for a pioneer drive instead.

Thanks for your reply. I am probably going to pony up the extra for a different burner.

I have had great success with LiteOn CD burners but apparently their DVD technology is not up to par.

And by the way, after an initial response from LiteOn Tech Support several days ago, I have received no word about my drive.

May be your problem with your 411S is the type installtion you have chosen, which goes against the original design of the drive, that means the drive has been designed to be connected to IDE Conterller as a internal drive burner but as you have indicated you installed it some how as a external drive.

You can disconnect the drive and try to connect it as internal drive to one of your IDE Controller and then see how the drive beheaves before you make a decision to return it.

I have the same drive for a week now, updated the firmware to FSOF, have burnt 7 DVD-R so far without any problem with average burning time for each full disk burning about 14.20 minutes.

I got my 411s at bestbuy friday after thanksgiving for $79 bucks to replace a digital research dvd +-rw. So far, it works as advertised. I had to change the jumper settings to master as it came out of the box as slave. I also flashed to current bios coz the dvd's that I burned using XCopy Gold played on my Sony DVD player but not on my buddy's KLH dvd player.

You might want to take it back and get a replacement if it's not past the 30 days.
