Different types of Verbatim DVD+R (4x)

Postby MikeTR on Wed Dec 03, 2003 11:49 am

I came across three different types of 4x Verbatim DVD+R disks (in the same store).
Aside from different packaging, they only varied in where they were made: Japan, Singapore and Taiwan.
The Made in Japan disks look like this (pastel colored in simline cases):
Image
I hope they are Taiyo Yudens, but can anyone confirm this?
Also what would the other ones most likely be? They were 5- and 10-packs in jewel cases. MCC wouldn't be bad either.

made in japan =TY
made in singapore = MCC
made in taiwan = MCC (CMC under mcc supervision) (unless CMC/ricoh has allready got a deal for producing 4x media because MCC is concentrating on 8x media)

The Pastel media are TY yes. In the US some Verbatim 4x DVD+R media are indeed made by Ricoh but I haven't seen any in Europe so the rest should be MCC.

Great, the pastels are definately TY's then?
Would the fact that the Singapore disks are made by MCC themselves make those disks better than de Taiwanese (supervised CMC) disks?
So the choice would be:
1. Japan.
2. Singapore.
3. Taiwan.

Right?

No it would be for most users.
1 Singapore
2 Japan
3 Taiwan (Because you could get CMC if it is real MCC then these take a second position)

Based on all test data I gathered up so far MCC +R media works better as TY +R with most recorders.
For Lite On users your version is correct with TY above MCC.

The MCC media of Singapore and the MCC media of taiwan should be of the same quality ! If the price difference is really big I would gamble (knowing that my Pioneer a06 can burn CMC DVD+R quite good if CMC made a good product. But for some writers this isn't recommended ) with buying first on pack of the taiwanese media if it's MCC then you could buy some more.

I don't believe there are any MCC DVD+R's being made in Taiwan, they are all CMC ADIP codes. These will be either Verbatim or even Verbatim DLP. If it says made in Taiwan, bet on CMC.
The MCC very good DVD+R in most drives, but still not up to TY standards.
I would get the TY every time, unless the MCC is much cheaper.

Still since you as a Lite On user would be better to buy TY since Lite On's are better optimised for it ! But most other drives like MCC better.
Check arround when the Plextor 708 was released some respectable magazines checked the writing quality and only MCC performed excellent at 8x.

MCC has shipped some production of MCC disc's to taiwan. So there is a good change that it has the MID code of MCC still I would only take the gamble with one pack if your drive supports decently made CMC disc's and the price difference is big enough (50%) between real Singapore or Japan media.

I was able to find on instance of a DVD+R 4x called Verbatim DLP - Advanced AZO, that was made in Taiwan and had an MCC ADIP, but all other DLP and non-DLP that is made in Taiwan has thus far been CMC.

Yes it's rare MCC AZO media from made in Taiwan still it is produced.

made in India (Datalife Plus) should be MCC media. Verbatim made a quite nice deal with MBIL about the production but I didn't know that production of DVD+R in India allready reached the market.

What you will see quite soon is that there will be no DVD+R 4x made in Singapore any more since there moveing to DVD+R 8x completely over there.

Interesting so far.
Especcially since all of the disks are more or less the same price. The 'made in Japan' pastel disks even are a little cheaper than the others. :D I really like my TY CD-R's and I'd like to get high quality DVD+R's as well (for archiving). I'm still in doubt between TY and MCC on this.

In any case, Singapore is to be preferred over Taiwan, since they will definately be MCC (as opposed to possible CMC'), right?
BTW, all the disks are Verbatim DatalifePlus (Advanced AZO). The 10-pack looks like this:
Image
The 5-pack looks about the same, only with pinkish 'twirls' instead of blue.

BTW, WHERE are you finding these pastel Verbatims? If it's in the USA, it might be the first sighting of TY DVD+R in the USA. :D

Yep, it does. Sorry guys :P .
Well, not really sorry since you get most of the good stuff first all the time (and not to mention cheaper).

I've used both of them on a Liteon 411S (the package is the same as shown in your image) and had slightly better results with the Singapore ones. The "Made in Taiwan" Verbatim DLP disks didn't perform bad though and had even better PO results (they had the MCC code).

I did KProbe scans of a few disks of both types that I can send you if you want - to summarize a couple (average) results:
Verbatim DLP (Singapore): PI Tot 346412, PI Max 66 - PO Tot 16119, PO Max 19
Verbatim DLP (Taiwan): PI Tot 688807, PI Max 110 - PO Tot 80, PO Max 3

BTW, the disks were bought in Spain

So TY's suit the Lite-On better and MCC the Plextor? Exactly the two drives I'm still undecided between for upgrading to.
I can get a good deal on the Plex-708 so it's only 50 euros more expensive than the Lite-On 811 (and 70 more than the -411). Normally I wouldn't consider the Plex because it's too expensive compared to the Lite-On, but now the difference isn't that big.

Decisions, decisions, decisions....... :-?

The difference between
Plextor 708 and the Lite ON 811S are the following.

Plextor - excellent burnquality, limited media support for -r - 2 year waranty -good build quality

Lite On 811S - okay burnquality, better media support for -r - might support 8x dvd-r and 4x dvd-rw in the future. - waranty is based on your shop mostly. ( Lite On support when it comes to waranty sucks) - cheap construction.

I would go for the Plextor since I have had very bad experience with Lite On drives (allways break down in 2 years time)and only good experience with Plextor drives.(Still going strong after 5 years)
