1x CD Writers available?

I am looking for a modern CD-R burner (Firewire, USB2, or ATA) that can burn an audio CD at 1x speed. Does anyone have advice how I go about finding them or recommendations for specific devices? Of the reviews that I have read, I can't find one that writes slower than 4x.

welcome to the forums. May i suggest that you check for 8x or slower. All 6x and slowers do 1x that I have known of.

if u get a 2x burner then you are in the money

I would *NOT* suggest getting a burner that old... for one, it will not last long... 2: it will not support newer media very well, and 3: burning at 1x is a good way to get a failed burn, due to media not supporting burns below 4x anymore (for the most part).

Heck, the LG 52x32x52x drive doesn't even burn below 8x! neither does the LiteON LDW-401s or LDW-411s

I'd just recomend a modern 52x drive and just only burn slower. The Premium, is, of course, a good choice, the LTR-52327S is good, and if you want a DVD Burner, I hear the LDW-401/411S are good at burning CD's.

I'd recommend a modern 52x drive, too. In fact, most drives today burn at a higher quality when burning fairly fast than they do when burning extremely slowly (like 8x or less).

Are you after accuracy or compatibility?

The Yamaha's have the "audio master quality" feature that helps with compatibility.

It does take "longer" [compared to my 52x LiteON] to burn a CD with that feature though [at least with my CRW3200] and you'll lose some capacity or playing time.

And the yamaha F1 with audiomaster technology is hard to get however some stores still sell it.(It will cost you a fortune. Las price I have seen for a new external version was 200+ and for the internal 100+)

You can still get 8x and 12x drives brand new if you look hard enough.

Having said that, a modern writer does write modern discs better, for two reasons...

1) Modern media is optimised for >=16x burns typically,

2) Modern writers, because they have to write so much more quickly and remain accurate, typically write with extremely high quality at 16x which is well within the capabilities of the drive.

I can *guarantee* that a good quality, modern writer will write better at 16x than an old writer (even one which has never been used) will write at 1x or 2x. Especially with modern media, which the old drive will not be optimised for and will therefore make a "best guess" about, quite possibly a less-than-ideal one.

The only thing you need to be careful of is writing in Z-CLV or CAV/P-CAV mode. This can and does affect writing quality. Write with the fastest speed a modern drive will allow when burning in CLV mode (typically 16x or 24x for some new writers).

Even so, the recording quality of many modern drives when recording at their maximum speed (reached by P-CAV) is very good; it's often better than using an older drive to record to modern media.
