DVD+R compatibility with ps2 & xbox

Postby ChrisMcV1 on Sun Nov 30, 2003 9:50 pm

Hello, I have recently purchased a Nu Tech DDW-081 DVD+R/+RW burner. It does not support the DVD-R/-RW format. I will be installing it shortly and look forward to putting it to work. I would like to know first however what would be the recomended brand of media and software I should use for compatibility with a ps2 or xbox (I have both). I have read many different opinions on the subject. If anyone has had success with a specific combination of DVD+R media type and software for a ps2 or xbox, please let me know! Thanks a lot. :)

I use TDK 4x and memorex 4x (both RICOHJPNR) and nero and they play fine on my v5 ps2 and my nephew's v7 ps2. They're burn @ 4x with a pioneer a06.

I have both a PS2 and an X-Box. Every DVD+R video I have burned on my Pioneer DVR-A06 has played fine on both the PS2 and the X-Box. (Memorex and Fuji disks) I have used ULead MovieFactory2 to author the disks and Nero 5.5/6 to burn them.

I haven't tried burning any games.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

Some DVD-ROM drives in Xbox's are not capable of reading DVD+R disks.

Look at this page to figure out what drive you have, and what it will play:

The info at that page is not correct at all.
The Samsung drive reads DVD+RW without problems. DVD+R is also read without problems if burned with DVD-ROM book type.
The Philips drive reads some DVD±R/RW but it's quite finicky in what media it likes.

It is correct more or less. Most drives only write to DVD+R in DVD+R booktype, and the guide is not supposed to get too technical. Only the NU and some Ricoh drives are capable of writing DVD+R to DVD-ROM booktype. My 708A burned games work fine in my Xbox with a Thomson drive, and the 708 can only burn to DVD+R booktype.

Less then because also:
DVD+RW works with Samsung drive without changing book type.
Some DVD+R/RW works with the Philips drive
Far from all DVD-R/RW works with the Philips drive.

BenQ/Philips based drives, NEC ND-1000A/1100A based drives can also write DVD+R as DVD-ROM so that's actually possible with most single format DVD+R/RW drives (Lite-On LDW-401S is one of the few exceptions).

Intresting...

Not a bad guide for beginers, but not very accurate either. Now wouldn't this all be easier if M$ just used one drive in the Xbox... LOL.
