Memorex 4X +R: Are some now manufactured by CMC???

Postby VEFF on Sun Nov 30, 2003 4:18 pm

I ordered a bunch of Memorex 4X +R real cheap, but I just read on another forum minues ago that (some) Memorex 4X +R is NOW manufactured by CMC!!!

Has anyone seen this to be the case?

If so, I might just return them...

I bought some the other day & found out they were made by CMC. I got a refund from COMPUSA after I burned a coaster.

It does appear so:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=836

Most importantly for you I would imagine:

These media blows. only able to burn at 4x on my 708a plextor. Turns out these are not the ricoh media. No da** wonder they were priced the way they were for $30 at amazon. grrr...

One person even bought them hoping they would be RITEKG04's

Bought a 25 pack spindle of these on Amazon.com hoping that they'd be Ritek G04's, but they weren't.

wow that was a close one I went to officemax to pick up some memorex 4x dvd+r but they're out

I just double check the 4 pack of memorex I'd from amazon they're all RICOH, but now I guess I'll just stick with ritek g04.

All the Memorex 4x DVD+R and also DVD+RW discs I have bought at Best Buy and CompUSA have all checked out as Ricoh media - same type used by TDK and they have all burned perfectly for me!

Whew! You guys scared me. I just bought 50 (10 x 5 pack) from Futureshop last week as they were on sale for $9.99CDN (~6.50US) per 5 pack. Thankfully they are all Ricoh.

Thanks for the info guys!
I was at my girlfriend's place when I posted, and we were on our way out the door, so I couldn't check dvdrhelp.com

I will check what they actually end up shipping me.
If some are CMC, I will simply finish that spindle at 4X and return all the unopened spindles!

You know, this is very ironic! I was just talking with a buddy of mine about how Memorex has this annoying habit of starting out with a high quality product, and gaining a lot of respect for it, and then switching to a lower quality product once they have people hooked. This has happened with Reel 2 reel products, audio cassettes, video cassettes, and CD-Rs... during the talk I mentioned that currently Memorex actually had good quality DVDRs, and that I was hoping it would last... well, there goes my last strain of faith in Memorex. Actually, I blame myself, for being too trusting. Luckily I by no means need to rely on Memorex for DVDRs anymore! :D

Someone who bought them at the same place said he got Ricoh, so I remain hopeful. My shipment arrives tomorrow.

Still, it is a shame that they switched over.

I got them the Memorex 10+1 packs 1-4x are all CMC.
According to the people of Datrarius and PC-Active they were quite good manufactured. The 3 point measurement check for Reflectivity and the woble groove of the empty disc's. Showed all results which were all according to the standard. (The ricoh and Ritek +R most times had one or two parameter sligthly outside the standards.Ritek(G04) -R had even more, but then again it's -r media and it were all very small differences.
According to the testingperson the media should still be quite fine.

Now the problem is that it's CMC. So most drive manufacturers won't do much for the optimalisation since CMC has a reputation of great variance in media quality so good optimalisation without a excellent running OPC is still useless.

So how do they burn ?
Well I only burned one disc on 2,4x on my Pioneer A06. Now the CMC disc doesn't show any problems according to the graph in cd speed. But keep in mind that the Pioneer A06 is one of the most tollerance DVD readers I have seen. Also no problems with copying the data back on the PC.

So far I just picked up a small amount of cheap media by Ritek/CMC. SInce both manufacturers are known for a great variaty in disc quality I decided it might be wise to gamble not on one. But on 3. So I got Ritek G04 DVD-R and Ritek and CMC DVD+R 1-4x media. Just to have some media befor the good media will arrive. (Verbatim (MCC) DVD-R, Ricoh DVD+R) Which I will probally buy arround christmas. ( Just avoiding the Dutch levy on DVD-R by buying it in Germany :D )

Is there a way to tell if the package has CMC or Ricoh media in it without opening the package? Does CMC/Ricoh have different packaging/cake boxes? Are they made in different countries?

Thanks.

I'v read on a diffrent forum that the CMC discs have a black base and a taller lip on the top of the spindel.
The Ricoh have a gray base and a shorter lip on top of the spindel.

Ricoh and Ritek packaging is easy to spot. Grey base and rounded top edge on the cakebox. CMC has a black base and sharp vertical lip at the top edge.
Memorex DVD+R has always been both CMC and Ricoh, depending on where you bought it. (Europe vs USA). Actually, I've seen less variability in quality (error rates) in the CMC than in the Ricoh JPN01 4x media. the CMC is not terribly good stuff, but it's fairly consistant. Verbatim (not DLP) is also CMC. HP is CMC too.

The couple of 5 packs I bought at Future Shop a couple of weeks ago are Ricoh - looks like FS is safe for Canadians who want Ricoh for now - perhaps that's why the new spindle which someone referred me to in another thread disappeard awhile ago off the site right after they appeard.

So if The Ver: DLP don't have a black base is that a good sign for good media?

You know I was wondering this very thing 2 weeks ago when I got my hands on my 5 spindles I ordered from Amazon. Well, I ordered 2 but they shipped 5.

Only 1 spindle has a black base and high lip. I was wondering if CMC was in the +R game just by looking at the spindle packaging...after Amazon was nice enough to ship 3 spindles free, I can't complain at all.

Thanks.
I have only had gray spindles up until now, and they have indeed been Ricoh.
My shipment is due to arrive tomorrow; I will check the base before opening any spindles.

I would have noticed if they were anything but gray since I have gotten used to they way they look...
