Best all around DVD authoring software?

Postby choppedliver on Mon Nov 17, 2003 8:19 pm

Ok, im asking about somethign i really know nothign about, I admit. My sister is in filmschool and she said she wants me to put a burner in her computer, (no problem), and she needs some authoring software. I would only use DVD's for storing large amounts of data, I dont know anything about the other uses, such as creating movies with menus and such, and Im not gonna pretend I do :) You guys are the experts :) so give me your opinions.

What are some good ones out there?

I like Ulead VideoStudio($100USD),you can capture(DV & analog),edit, add effects, menus and burn.Prices for authoring programs run $50-20000 depending on your needs.I recommend you or your sister check out www.dvdrhelp.com ,great guides and forums.

Scenarist

Postby BatGnat on Mon Nov 17, 2003 8:38 pm

Scenarist is the Best, it can do anything and everything you would ever need. It also comes, as a bonus, the worst manual i have ever seen. And it is not user friendly.

although I havent tried it, http://www.adobe.com/products/encore/overview.html would probably be great, as adobe make great software.

Or you could just use the software that comes with the drive (Mine came with Sonic - My DVD), and see if they need something better after that.

wow just checked out that adobe link... looks pretty sweet. she is very familiar with other adobe programs(illustrator, photoshop, premiere, etc), so that might be the ticket.

Check out the guides and the forum on http://www.doom9.org. With the aforementioned dvdrhelp.com it's the best place for DVD-Video info.
The best program quality-wise seems to be Scenarist (although expensive and quite complicated). Other good choices are Spruce DVDMaestro, SpruceUp and Sonic DVDit. The first two seem to be discontinued for the PC since bought by Apple though.
Good luck.
