DV camcorder to DVD

I am looking for suggestions on copying video from a DV camcorder
to a DVD.
FWIW The camcorder is a Sony Mini DV and the DVDRW
is a Pioneer A06.
All suggestions are welcome.

My first attemp utilizing the bundled software was very jerky video.
Capture using firwire.
PC is an XP 2500+ w/512 MB DDR333
Using WinXP Pro SP1
Software is Ulead bundled with the A06

I am not expert, but have been doing:

1. Capture to HD using Firewire with FULL AV Quality. (I use Pinnacle Studio . DO NOT USE MPEG Quality. While I think your XP2500+ is good enough, you may still have to worry about your HD speed (do you have 7200rpm drive or a RAID 0 setup?) You should get a AVI file that is approximately 13GB.

1.5 Defrag your HD might be a good idea. Pinnacle's capture program tells me how many frames is drop. If you leave your computer alone and defrag your HD (with a good 7200rpm drive), you should not have any drop frames.

2. Author using software.

3. Encode using highest bitrate that the software will allow you to fit all the DV into 1 disc. I normally encode the DVD Content just to HD first. Then use PowerDVD to check before burning.

4. Burn it onto DVD using Nero and the like....

5. If you are short on HD space..... well I suggest you just go get an extra HD... it is cheap these days.

My hard drive is the Western Digital 120 GB 7,200 RPM w/8MB cache.(15 Gigs used) I just clean installed last week. But..... your right the first attempt with the jerky video was using bundled software and set to MPEG. On the second attempt I just used the windows movie maker to capture as a DV-AVI ~13GB. I used the Ulead Movie Factory to edit and burn with MUCH improved results. I can probably get better results yet so I appreciate the help.

1. Use a firewire connector to transfer the video from your Cam to the PC. That way you will not lose anything in quality. You can use a program like http://windv.mourek.cz/, http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm or http://www.scenalyser.com/main.html to make this easier.

2. Encode with TMPGEnc Pro or a good Authoring program. There is a host of very good programs out there. Even some real professional options if you want to go that far. Just depends on what you want to achieve.
