I read the Philips news release on the new 16X DVD +R writer they are demonstrating. A very dissapointing fact that was of no surprise to me was the recording time.

6min for a DVD.

Given that the Plextor can do the job now on 4X media in 8min, I think that any new release of DVD writers in terms of speed increases is no big deal. Zone and Partial speed restrictions make the posting of the writer at 16X bull, the posted speed should be an average speed over the entire write.

Thus the only true interesting thing to watch for is the dual layer or blue ray writers that are due out in the near future.

Just my 2 cents

Yeah, I saw that too. Their test drive/setup(?) probably uses CAV.

Ian,

You need to get that wart removed from the knuckle of the ring finger of your left hand. Wart cells steal vital nourishment from the hair follicles and cause baldness. They also steal hormones vital to the functionality of..............................

No, that's not me in the picture. I'm a little younger and have more hair.

Is it just me, or does it look like that red laser is going into the silver/top part of the disc?

To me it appears that the laser beam is going to the "head"
unit (where the white, green, blue, red wires are). By looking at the
reflection on the disc it "appears" to be centered
on the disc. :o

When I say centered I mean centered on the
"writable" area of the disc. I also wanted to add
that I really like your garage Ian.
Remember: You can only look into a lazer twice. LOL!

I knew that. You said just kidding in the first post. I just chose to ignore it.

The picture is most definately not taken during actual operation. They wouldn't let a person stand there and pretend to be adjusting something while the laser was actually burning.

My guess is that this is just a PR photo, and they put the disc in backwards because it looks cooler then photoshopped a laser in there.

Maybe it's one of those new fangaled dual layer discs and it'll have
lazers burning from both sides of the disc. If you look real close
at the photo you'll also notice some kind of shavings and dirt
everywhere. Maybe they like to operate in a "true" working
environment.
