Time for the P708A to rip a DVD

Postby BMR on Sun Nov 09, 2003 7:03 pm

I need perhaps the AviationWiz or Veff for this one:

Using DVD shrink 2.3 and my new plextor 708a which I updated to the version 1.3 before I began, I ripped a movie from a brand new DVD. In this particular case the final file was only 3.4 gig in size, about 3/4 of the disk and thus I used no compression and eliminated the non english soundtracks and subtitles. I have an athlon 1800 with a gig of main memory. It took 26 min to rip the movie from the DVD. It seemed as if the plextor was not working very hard during the process.

To actually burn the movie to a blank memorex 4x +R only took 5min using clonedvd and it works perfectly in my apex player.

What is the slowdown that causes such a slow rip of the movie ?? I recall doing similar rips with the LG4040B of 4.3 Gig using compression and doing so in ablout 15min.

To speed up ripping next time. With the tray closed, Hold down the Eject button for like 5 sec., the LED will blink a few times, then put in the DVD, rip, and enjoy a faster rip.

I have often heard of sequences such as holding down buttons , but I thought that was to increase writing speed. What is going on in terms of reading when you do try this ( ie. what kind of increases in speed ? ) and do you have an example where you have tried the same rip with and without the button hold technique ??

Do you have to do this on each new insertion of a disk or does the speedup stay in place as long as your computer is on ??

Thanks,

Yes, you need to do this with every disc. It boosts the read speed from 2x CLV to 12x CAV. There's more info in my review.. otherwise check the manual. Plextor has a page on it in there.

Just read that section of you review on SpeedRead. I will try to do a test again with and without the speedRead turned on and report the differences.

Thanks Ian and Aviationwiz

He just lays at my feet and relaxes for the evening, It sure is nice to have a loyal pet around. They are very calming, something that can not always be said about computers :o
