Big Trouble with 411S

Postby Midda on Mon Nov 10, 2003 6:47 am

I just bought a Liteon 411S burner, but I can't use it. Once I install it, and boot up the computer, the system will reboot a few seconds after saying that it has found new hardware, then it just repeats the process. I've tried having it as the master and the slave, but it still doesn't work. I'm using XP Home, I have an AMD AthlonXP, and a VIA Soltek Motherboard. PLEASE helpe.

does BIOS recognize the drive?
maybe try changing the IDE cable?

Yeah, BIOS says it's all good, and I don't think it's the IDE cable, becuase it works fine with my two current drives... This is really annoying me. I was thinking that I could get some drivers for it, but there are none on the net. All I can find is a firmware update, and that's not gonna do me any good... :x

i dunno, maybe a firmware upgrade will help...i don't think it can hurt to try.

no drivers are needed for an optical drive, it's all built into Windows.

try installing the drive in another computer, to see if it intsalls OK there and recognized the Windows properly. and works.

i don't think that will make any difference, but maybe try updating the VIA 4-in-1s?

I think I've found the problem. It's happened to me before. As strange as it may sound, it's CloneCD. It's intefered with me optical drives before, but the problem now is, that when I uninstall it, before it gets a chance to finish removing all of the fiddy components, the computer shuts down - just as it does when I have the drive in. Once (most of) it has been removed, the computer stays on with the drive in, but Windows says that the drivers are corrupt or missing, and wont attempt to re-install them. Any thoughts?

Click Start -> Run -> msconfig
Then go to the last tab which is "Startup" and remove anything related to CloneCD. Restart and try the uninstallation again.

Even though making a mistake here wont crash your pc, it might lead to lotta head scratching. So better to make some screen caps / notes of original settings before you do anything. Also check the services tab for any CloneCD related services.

I forgot to mention that I'd already tried disabling all CloneCD stuff in the msconfig, but thanks anyways...

Re-installing XP did the trick, but it created a new profile and removed my old one... Need to make shortcuts again  but teh burner works now!!! YAY!!! :D

Thanks all, a mod can lock this topic now... :D
