you do not have DMA enabled on all drives.
Assuming XP or 2K, go to device manager and open the entry for the IDE controller, (both channels), enable DMA on all HD's and DVD drives.

Hello,
Thanks to both of you,I did as you adviced, you was right, the secondry IDE Device was the problem,I uninstalled the device and restarted my system and it was then set to Ultra DMD Mode 2,it seems to have solved the problem with CD-R,S,but copying a DVD is still the same,I know the disc I am copying it a good copy as it,s some data a friend of mine copied for me to test my system,my Primery IDE device is set to Ultra DMA Mode5,is this normal?,if there any other advice you can help me for the DVD copying I would be very grateful, hope you can understand what I mean,
again thank you,
Bill.

DVD readers generally only read recordable or dual-layer discs at 6x or 8x max. Would that be your situation?

yes, hard drives should be Ultra DMA mode 5 (or 6)

Thank you all for your help,I still have the problem of copying DVD,s,can anyone help with this,I posted this on another section(by mistake) and was asked what my configuration was,it is as follows,
Primery IDE Channel
Master Maxtor 60Gb HDD DMA ON
Slave Seagate 120Gb HDD DMA ON

Secondary IDE Channel
Master Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D DMA ON
Slave Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-7500 DMA ON
Do,s this make sense or could I configuration be better?,I would be grateful of any help or advice,
thank you,
Bill.
