April 2004 eh? Not nearly as quickly as I had previously heard! I wonder if DVD-R can beat DVD+R on the release date? That would be interesting!

April 2004 for a 2.4x means I won't have one until maybe april of 2005 when the price of the media will be more reasonable and speeds will be more reasonable as well. As it stands, at 2.4x it will be close to an hour for a full 8.5gig burn! :o

I heard spring of 2004.. April is in the spring right? DVD-R needs to pull it off to stay in the game.

DVD+R 9 - Dual-Layer DVD+R

Introduction
The DVD+R/+RW format is becoming increasingly popular for digital video recording as well as for all PC data storage applications. A key advantage of the DVD+R/+RW format over competitive formats is its backward compatibility with DVD read only systems, allowing playback in existing DVD players. The DVD+R/+RW disc provides the user with the ability to store 4.7 Gbyte of information on a single-sided 12-cm disc. For the future, the consumer will highly value even higher storage capacities.
One way to increase the data storage capacity of an optical disc is to introduce an extra storage layer that can be accessed from the same side of the disc. The DVD read-only standard already features dual-layer media. Development of dual-layer recordable (+R) media and recording technology therefore is a natural way to increase the DVD+R storage capacity to 8.5 Gbyte. Although some experts claimed that dual-layer recordable DVD is impossible to fabricate, we demonstrate that for dual-layer DVD+R the construction of a disc compatible with the dual-layer DVD-ROM standard is feasible.

Principle of dye-based optical recording: DVD+R
The dual-layer DVD+R system uses a thin organic dye film as data storage layer The recording principle is based on irreversibly modifying the dye’s physical and chemical structure, induced by heating with a focussed laser beam. The recorded marks have different optical properties than their unmodified surroundings, giving the same read-out signals as from read-only discs. The digital information is contained in the length of the recorded marks and unmodified spaces between them.
Dual-layer DVD+R
Dual-layer DVD+R has been developed by Philips and MKM. The research focused on the development of dual-layer organic dye media, recording technology, and logical format development. The challenge is to stay as close as possible to existing DVD-ROM dual-layer and DVD+R formats and technologies.

DVD+R 9
World's first Recordable Dual-Layer DVD that is Compatiblewith DVD-ROM & DVD-Video

8.5 Gbytedata storage capacity

4 HoursDVD quality video or 16 hoursVHS quality video

Single-sided: No need to turn the disc

Single-sided Dual-Layer DVD+R 9 is feasible

Storage capacity is increased from 4.7 Gbyte to 8.5 Gbyte

DVD+R 9 is fully compatible with DVD-ROM 9 standard.

First dual-layer discs are successfully prototyped together with MKM

The early planning was spring. However Philips and MCC have seen that Pioneer is not sitting still.
Since for both parties it is important to be the first. (specially for -r which might have problems with makeing faster drives)
I think that we can expect a earlier release.
Note all it's technology is there.
However a philips/MCC(and maybe Nutech) release wouldn't make the format a succes. So for that reason the other compannies have to be pulled over to buy this technology.
So I think there waiting for more support.
However if Pioneer pulls of a early release then a quick move with very low support might be pulled off.
