DVD+R 9 - Dual-Layer DVD+R
Introduction
The DVD+R/+RW format is becoming increasingly popular for digital video recording as well as for all PC data storage applications. A key advantage of the DVD+R/+RW format over competitive formats is its backward compatibility with DVD read only systems, allowing playback in existing DVD players. The DVD+R/+RW disc provides the user with the ability to store 4.7 Gbyte of information on a single-sided 12-cm disc. For the future, the consumer will highly value even higher storage capacities.
One way to increase the data storage capacity of an optical disc is to introduce an extra storage layer that can be accessed from the same side of the disc. The DVD read-only standard already features dual-layer media. Development of dual-layer recordable (+R) media and recording technology therefore is a natural way to increase the DVD+R storage capacity to 8.5 Gbyte. Although some experts claimed that dual-layer recordable DVD is impossible to fabricate, we demonstrate that for dual-layer DVD+R the construction of a disc compatible with the dual-layer DVD-ROM standard is feasible.
Principle of dye-based optical recording: DVD+R
The dual-layer DVD+R system uses a thin organic dye film as data storage layer The recording principle is based on irreversibly modifying the dye’s physical and chemical structure, induced by heating with a focussed laser beam. The recorded marks have different optical properties than their unmodified surroundings, giving the same read-out signals as from read-only discs. The digital information is contained in the length of the recorded marks and unmodified spaces between them.
Dual-layer DVD+R
Dual-layer DVD+R has been developed by Philips and MKM. The research focused on the development of dual-layer organic dye media, recording technology, and logical format development. The challenge is to stay as close as possible to existing DVD-ROM dual-layer and DVD+R formats and technologies.
