Backing up DVD movies...help!

Postby Stormshadow on Thu Oct 30, 2003 1:57 pm

Hey all...I'm having a little trouble and was wondering if anyone could give me a little assistance.

I finally grabbed a DVD-RW drive (Pioneer A06), and immediately wanted to try backing up some of my more expensive DVD movies.

I downloaded the trial version of DVD X Copy Xpress to give it a go. It says that it will allow 3 DVD backups before expiring.

Well, I've tried 2 unsuccessful burns so far, and have 2 expensive coasters. :-?
DVD X Copy Xpress only reads my movie from the DVD-ROM for about 10 seconds, goes into writing mode, and writes to the A06 for another 20 seconds tops.
It then spits out the DVD-R, and says it's complete.
It obviously isn't complete, seeing that it only writes 50 or so megs of data before it's done.

Any insights into why this is happening?
Or does anyone have any other methods/app suggestions for backing up DVD movies?

Thanks for any help.

Suggest you get DVDShrink, it's free and works great. Once you rip the movie, just burn it with Nero.

www.dvdshrink.info for tutorials, downloads

ive been using dvdshrink for awhile now, never lets me down

btw, just returned my sony dru-510a back to staples and swapped it out for the memorex (pioneer a06) + got $30 back

reason for this was my sony was erroring out on media, seems to be very media picky, and so far the pioneer is succeding where the sony failed

I use DVDShrink(DVD-9) or DVDDecrypter(DVD-5) to backup and RecordNow DX or DVDDecrypter to burn. All are free except RecordNow which came bundled with my DVD writer.
Do yourself a favor and get RecordNow 6.5 it's only $30USD/$50 for Deluxe:

Man, I can't believe you just said that. If you like the software and appreciates the programmer's hard work, buy the damn software from your local retailer or buy a legit key from nero. What the hell are you doing promoting pirating software? Shit, the least you could've done is tell the guy to buy a Lite-On CDRW or DVD writer which comes w/ a legit copy of Nero.

hey hoxlund that's not only good one, but a masterpiece!

burnatonce is great and free, but: officially supports only -R/W.
it (partially?) works with +R/W but not officially supported.

OK, I found this thread.

DVD+R/RW is the way of the future. DVD+RW speeds are currently faster and will continue to be, at 4x was 2x. Look at the LG GSA-4080B, 2x DVD-RW and 4x DVD+RW. They barely even got 8x DVD-R in there.

DVD-R also has more low quality media manufacturers out there, this may mean cheaper, but the quality is much much worse.

Also, there aren't any more DVD-R/RW only drives anymore, and as you can see, there are many dual format drives.
