Top Reading Speed of Dvd Writers

I don't recall anyone ever asking this question but:

How come all of the writers, even the newest 8X writers about to be released have a maximum reading speed for pressed single layered Dvd's of 12X, when there are plenty of cheap DVD-Rom drives that have a maximum of 16X. Would this not make ripping and reading of DVD data quicker if this was included in the writers ???

my sony was locked at 2x, but on my new pioneer, i have no clue

i use my JLMS 166s to rip (read) movies to hard drive, does it at full 16x

holy shit according to cdrfreaks, my new memorex (pioneer) rips at full 12x speeds on single layer, and 8x on dual layer

well no in the review they just show 12x movie rip speeds, no mention on if the firmware was patched

It reads data DVD's at 12x, but not DVD-Videos.

Looking at their review, the results are a little weird. The drive was identifying the DVD-Video disc as a DVD-ROM.. that's why it was reading it at 12x.

Same as DVD-ROM's. 12x with single layer and 8x with dual layer discs.

i figured as much, ill stick with my JLMS 166s's 16x ripping

btw Ian, you have no clue how easy it is to copy xbox games

im lovin the pioneer for that too

i thought you liked the Toshiba SD-M1712 with hacked firmware better for fast ripping, hox!

i use both, i have my JLMS in an external casing, but my toshiba is in my second computer, so i use both

to be honost i like the JLMS little more, seems to rip like a minute faster
