Confused! Need Help???

Postby pkd7423 on Wed Oct 29, 2003 12:33 pm

To all,

Just bought the LDW-411S.

I'm confused about Nero software.

I've seen Nero 6.0 OEM real cheap, I've seen Nero 6.0 Starter Kit at Walmart for about $40.00....on Nero's website I've seen Nero 6.0 Basic, and I've seen the full blown Nero 6.0 Ultra for $99.00.

What are the differences and what do I need?

I intend to use Ghost to image 3 other computers to a master servers hard drive and then burn the images to DVD as a form of backup.

I also intend to copy my old VHS tapes to DVD for play on set top players.

Also does Nero provide authoring software?

Thanks,
PK Davis

I'm not familiar with the Nero 6 Starter Kit. However, the OEM version does NOT include all of the programs that come with the Ultra version. Here's what's missing:

Nero Burning ROM 6
Nero BackItUp
Nero SoundTrax
Nero Wave Editor 2
NeroMIX

Yeah, OEM is cheap, but you're missing a lot of stuff. As far as "authoring" software goes, thats essentially what Nero Burning Rom is.

Thanks Ian!

Would I have any advantages trying to upgrade the Nero software I got with my Yamaha F1 or do I need to just out right purchase the new 6.0 version.

I'm assuming that the Yamaha Nero is OEM. I have version 5.5.9.9.

Thanks,

Even I do not know what a "Starter Kit" is, as we do not have any developed by Ahead. :-?

But you should only need to purchase an upgrade to Nero 6 from Nero 5 OEM. No need purchasing the Retail versoin, as you get the same features and capabilities with the upgrade purchase.

Here's what my research has gotten me so far:

Nero 6 Ultra Edition: (14 individual applications)

Nero StartSmart central starting point, command center

Nero Burning ROM 6 the software to burn CD and DVD

Nero Express 6 combines the performance of Nero Burning ROM 6 with a simple interface

NeroVision Express 2 the DVD simple interface…..whereas above is the CD interface

Nero BackItUp mature backup program

Nero Showtime DVD player

Nero SoundTrax audio package, be your own dj

Nero Wave Editor 2 audio package, tape and vinyl expertise

Nero Cover Designer create labels and covers

NeroMIX audio package, again….

Nero ToolKit optimize the burns…knows the equipment

Nero ImageDrive virtual disk drive…manipulates images….Ghost like

Nero Recode DVD copy program, formats out fluff and leaves just the movie

InCD 4 UDF packet writing, write to CD and DVD as if they are hard drives

Nero 6 OEM: (8 individual applications, with 2 of them subpar)

Nero StartSmart
Nero Express 6
InCD4
Nero Vision Express 2-se *
Nero ShowTime *
Nero Media Player
Nero ToolKit
Nero Cover Designer

*Special versions that do not support SVCD and DVD-video.

Most Recent Versions:

Program description Version
Nero BackItUp 1.0.0.13
Nero Burning ROM 6.0.0.19
Nero CD-DVD Speed 2.01
Nero Cover Designer 2.3.0.4
Nero Express 6.0.0.19
Nero ImageDrive 2.2.3
Nero InfoTool 2.0.4
Nero Media Player 1.4.0.7
NeroMIX 1.4.0.7
Nero Recode 0.9.9.6
Nero ShowTime 1.0.1.11
Nero SoundTrax 1.0.0.12
Nero StartSmart 1.0.0.11
NeroVision Express 2.0.1.9
Nero Wave Editor 2.0.0.16

The Nero OEM version is missing Nero Burning ROM 6....the meat of the whole thing as far as I can see.....sure it has Nero Express 6....but what functionality do you lose. It also has 2 subpar utilities, Nero Vision Express 2-se and Nero Showtime. Both of which are probably full blown apps with nothing missing in the Ultra edition.....(can anybody verify this)?

As to the Nero 6 Starter Kit......I'm not sure what individual packages are in it. I saw it in a retail box at my local Walmart for $39.99. They had 4 boxes left on Monday. I'm thinking of going today and see exactly what it contains.

On Nero's web site on Monday or Tuesday under updates or downloads I saw that they had updates for "Nero 6 Starter Kit". At least I thought I did. Now it is not there! The only thing they have now is Nero 6 updates with 3 individual downloads to make it happen....and on a different page 5.5 updates.

It looks to me since I have OEM 5.5 I can get Nero Ultra for $50.00 (the downloadable version). Only $10.00 more than the Starter Kit I saw at Walmart. Now, I just need to find that serial number they want.....!!!! Is it somewhere in my Yamaha F1 documentation or on the CD sleeve somewhere??????
I think this is the way to go!

Has anybody ever seen the "Starter Kit" I'm talking about? I also seem to recall that they called something "Nero 6 Basic" on their website....but now I can't find any reference to it.

I must be getting old....this is driving me crazy.....first it's there, then it's not.........

Thanks,
PK Davis

Not to cloud the issue any more, but hopefully to provide more detail....I noticed:

Nero Ultra 6 has these packages in addition to the OEM stuff:

Nero Burning ROM 6, Nero BackItUp, Nero SoundTrax, Nero Wave Editor 2, NeroMIX, Nero ImageDrive, Nero Recode

7 additional packages in all.........

Of Interesting NOTE:

The Nero 6 OEM has 1 package that Ultra does not......hmmmmmm

Nero Media Player

Can this be right???????? OEM has a package that Ultra does not??????

Thanks,

You can get the Nero Serail key from the Yamaha bundle in one of two ways.

Either do a write operation and at the end save the Nero Log file generated. Then open this log file and at the top of the Log file you will see your Nero Serial key is listed.

Or you can go into the Registry.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and under SOFTWARE->AHEAD->NERO BURNGIN ROM->INFO you will see your serail key listed there.

And yes, OEM bundles have Nero Media Player, and Retail bundles have NeroMix. NeroMix can do all that Nero Media Player can do and more. So no need for both to be on the same installation CD.

My sincere apologies to Nero aficionados!!!

The "Starter Kit" and "Basic Edition" I referenced in this thread are Roxio products! I just came back from Walmart and saw the package.

I am embarassed and sorry if anyone went down the wrong trail on this.

Thank you,
