DVD-RW and DVD+RW for Pioneer DVR-06? What and where?

After following the discussion of this helpful forum for some weeks now and after evaluating my needs I opted for a Pioneer DVR-06 bulk drive from Newegg.com with an additional year of warranty by Newegg for $141.00. I would like to get some rewritable media, what would you recommend for this particular burner? DVD-RW or DVD+RW or both? And then the next question? Where is the best place to get the media for a decent price? Thanks in advance for your help.

I like to use DVD+RW media. It's faster (2.4x vs 2x) and the background formatting feature is nice (yes, I know that you can quick format DVD-RW media with some software).

I've started ordering most of my media from Meritline (www.meritline.com).

Thanks Ian for your response and also for your good work on cdrlabs.com. Very much appreciated. What brands of DVD+RW do you recommend for the Pioneer burner? Any particular positive or negative experiences? Also, can RW disks be read in stand-alone or regular PC DVD drives (this may be a stupid question for those who have dealt longer with DVD burning, so I apologize in advance for it :-))?

I don't have a Pioneer drive installed in my primary computer. However, I use DVD+RW media from Verbatim, Memorex and Sony. No problems so far.

Not all stand-alone or PC DVD drives can read DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs. You'll have to check and see if your drives support these discs.

It also depends on what format you're using. If you're using packet writing (drag and drop files onto the disc), you might need to install some software on the computer to read the disc. Otherwise some software can make a disc "compatible".

The pioneer can burn ANYTHING that you can thrown at it.I have been burning ALOT of the el cheapo HQ 1-4X dvd-rs at 4.3X no problems with readability either.I too use dvd+rw for the few times that I do use RW just because its a little faster 2.4X vs 2X.Verbatim,Optodisk,Infodisk all work just fine with it.

That sounds encouraging. I have bought Memorex 4x media both + and -, got a good deal on it ~ $1 per piece, however, I will only pick up the drive in 3 weeks when I visit my in-laws in the USA... thanks for the replies so far. I have experimented with DVDshrink on my regular LiteOn DVD player and it does a good job it seems. I am using Nero 6.0.15 with the patch and hope that it should do the trick with the Pioneer. I will use the drive with a firewire/usb2 external enclosure...

I have used Memorex DVD+R and DVD+RW disks with my Pioneer A06 with no problems. I also purchased a package of Fuji DVD-R (because they were cheaper than Fuji DVD+R), no problems there. I've also tried some cheap generic DVD+RW disks (Optodisk) no problems there either.

So far I'm pretty happy with the media compatibility of the A06.
