When will Liteon 811S go mainstream?

Postby integspec on Tue Oct 14, 2003 8:01 pm

Guys,

Does any of you know exactly when Liteon would start marketing it's 811S? It would be very helpful if you have specific info about Korean market. And also the average price if you will.

I hope it will not be pricey as the Plextor. Of course the plextor is good and there is no doub't about it, but it's difficult to justify the price.

Cheers.

Not sure yet. Haven't heard of it from any Lite-On distributors (or Lite-On IT itself.)

Here is an article describing the possibility of what is coming:
The DVD+R/RW format is likely to become the dominating format in 2004 according to most drive and media manufacturers.
Lite-On will introduce an 8x DVD writer, the LDW-811S, in late October. A 12x model could follow as early as in the end of Q1 2004.
AOpen will introduce a 12x DVD+R/RW writer in the beginning of 2004.
16x writers could appear in 2004 and will be the max speed for DVD burners.
CMC, Ritek and an unamed Japanese manufacturer will start mass production of 8x DVD+R media in mid October.
Sony has developed a dual layer DVD+R blank but it will likely never reach production stage because the drives needed to burn it will be too expensive.

Thanks a lot to both of you. Think I better wait until end of October before making a decision. On the other hand, I have already decided that it would only be either 411 or most probably 811. I really hope Liteon wouldn't follow the precedent of price level set by Plextor for 8x drives :-(.

Cheers.

Oh, Liteon might find themselves in a tight spot if they keep on dragging the 811 release date further. Surely Plextor / Sony and others would cash in, in the absence of Liteon.

IMHO, the availability of a 8x burner is secondary to having true 8x media available, which will come much later. Even 4x burning on current media is marginal compared to burning the same media at 2.4x. Also, assuming that the 8x will be CAV, the difference in times will be smaller than you might expect.

November seems to be when Lite-On will ship a small quantity of LDW-811S. (I think) it will go mainstream perhaps in December.

Could be great Christmas gifts.

But 8x media will begin to replace 4x and 2x media in 2004.

Grrr, my impatience is killing me. How long can I wait for 811 without grabbing one of those flashy 411s!!

Another one proves the infallibility of Liteon's marketing strategy :-( .

I'd have to go with Kennyshin. Probably late November to mid December.

Forgot all about this thread. Don't think it matters now either but went ahead and bought a 411 mid last week. So far many good burns with Thats (Taiyo Yuden) DVD-R 4x media. Reason for -R media, cheaper in Seoul.

"Good burns" is it an oxymoron or a contradiction??

Cheers and thanks a lot for all your good advice guys.

Good for you, but Ricoh DVD+R 4x media are much cheaper than Taiyo Yuden That's DVD-R 4x media in Seoul. Recently, the largest Lite-On It distributor in South Korean market imported some Ricoh DVD+R 4x media, made by Ritek under Ricoh technologies and license, to make it easy for them to sell their newly imported LDW-401S and LDW-411S. I also met them in Seoul and encouraged it.

4x DVD media in South Korea

Princo -R/-RW @ SI: less than 1,000 won, sometimes under 500 won
BeAll +R: around 2,000 won
BeAll -R: around 2,000 won
Ritek +R Datacube: around 2,500 won
Ritek +R Datacube: around 4,000 won
Ritek +R Ricoh (same media Lite-On bundles wth LDW-401S/411S): under 2,000 won
Taiyo Yuden That's +R: around 3,000 won
Taiyo Yuden That's -R: around 2,500 won
Mitsubishi: unquotable (too high)

Depends on where and from whom you buy.

Cheers.

Yep, but definately pre-order only. And this particular store is known for 'showing off' new stuff. They had the -411 on their site very early as well, but it still took several weeks for it actually showing up in the store itself. I'll be sure to post my first confimed sighting.

There are now very few Ricoh in South Korea. If you want, I'll reserve some.
