how long has your burner lasted b4 death

Postby tofudrifter on Mon Oct 27, 2003 2:06 am

I've burnt over 50 ps2 games and 100 movies already on my HP dvd300i and it's still good, but been gettin' more coasters lately with 4x memorex burning @ 2.4x burn. now i'm using decrypter since I can select below 2.4x. I think that kinda helps little although i can be mistaken. I have a spindle of 12 bad burns. I guess that's makes for decent ratio of good burns no? Time for an 8x plextor hehehe

I don't own a DVD burner, but I've never had a CD burner die (and I have two old ones still in use from 2001). I don't think your drive should be dying after only 150 discs; if you really think its dying, I'd recommend that you RMA it if you can.

Well 2 cd-burners are death.
One Philips 3610 which survived arround 3,5 years. The last half year it would burn only on Mitsui. This drive burned quite some disc's so it had it's life I still use it sometimes as a cdrom drive. Also it will still burn some old manufactured Mitsui disc's with some tries. So 100% death it isn't but it's close to.
Note the Philips 3610 is one of the worsed manufactured drives made by a companny.

And a Lite On 48246S which died last weekend. At least last weekend I convinced myself that it really is dying(It sometimes still burns but then the quality is bad. But in 95% of the cases it fails allready to burn.) This one will be brought back to the store.
Allmost all Lite On cd-recorders seem to die in my neighbourhood lately. For this reason I won't recommend a Lite On cd-recorder at the moment.

I also have a Plextor 24/10/40A which is still going strong.

That's strange; I wonder if your area got a bad batch of Lite-On drives recently.

well I'm not saying that I think my burner is dyin', I'm just trying to get feel for how long these dvd burners will last. Techonology has gone through alot, remember back in the days in around 97' when cd burners cost $300 and only lasted 100 burns!

With the exception of my old Philips CDD-3610, I have not had a single CD or DVD burner die, even after a fair amount of burns in some cases.
The Philips still works (the last tyime I had it hooked up) but seemed to be behaving a bit strange (temporarily? I can't remember al the details, since it has been a long while since I used it).
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW

Mitsumi CR-4804TE: Still working great after 5000+ burns
Yamaha 8824: 4 out of 10 died within 8 months (totally died).
None of my Lite-On's have died yet (From LTC-12101C and close to every model up to LTR-52246S) although I had one DOA LTR-48246K.....
None of my plextors have died yet.
Old 8X philips died 2 months ago, burning about 100 discs only.
all my other drives still works :)

Guess I've been lucky?
