DRU500A cannot read dvd recordable media anymore.

Postby kentarou on Mon Oct 27, 2003 12:34 pm

I've been running firmware 2.0f on my DRU500a for a few months now. I had not problems with my drive reading or writing to dvd recordable media until yesterday when I tried to use a Ritek +RW and a Sony +RW disc.

I thought that it might be a firmware problem, so I updated to 2.0g. Still no luck getting media to work.

CD-R works fine.

I've been burning mainly Princo 4x DVD-Rs since the price of these has gone down significantly. Would burning DVD-R discs constantly on my DRU500a cause any problems for it since it's not a native -R recorder?

Would anyone know where I can get my drive repaired for a reasonable costs if it turns out to be a drive hardware problem?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

I would be very surprised if burning DVD-Rs hurt anything; after all, your drive was made to burn DVD-Rs!

Have you tried to use DVD+RW media before you tried the Ritek and Sony +RW discs?

Also, if this is a hardware problem, you should be able to get the drive replaced for free unless the warranty has already expired. If the warranty has expired, I doubt you can get the drive repaired at all.

The +RW I mainly use in my drive are Ritek +RW. Warranty on my drive has expired already as well. should've bought that extended warranty plan.

So, the Ritek +RW discs were working before, but they aren't working now?

What firmware version were you using the last time you used +RW discs?

I have same problem with DRU-500a

I was using Meritline media for a number of months (2x -R) and had no problems. Now the meritline media doesnt want to work anymore- swapped two different orders of DVDs. I bought 5 Sony 4x +R and they work fine, but the -R is completely random- sometimes it burns, sometimes it doesnt. I have re-installed everything and even moved the drive internal to external and between machines and OS's and it seems to be random success. I also grabbed the new 2.0g firmware. I am out of ideas short of the drive failing. I am going to buy some new +R 4x media and see how it works. Can a drive fail in only one standard, for example 2x -R only while the others work okay?

I've been using 2.0f for a while now. I upgraded to 2.0g yesterday hoping it would fix the problem but it didn't..

Also, I've determined my drive CAN read and write +R and -R, CD-R and CD-RW, but CANNOT read and write DVD+RW and DVD-RW at all.

I don't know what's going on, but I guess I'm gonna have to use my HP DVD200i to write +RW until my Plextor PX-708A comes in the mail.

Guess as long as I can write +R and -R everything should be ok since I don't use RW that much and only for trading stuff.
