I need a history lesson...

Postby jberry on Sun Oct 26, 2003 10:26 pm

How is it that DVD movies are dual layer and yet we the consumer cannot buy dual layer burners? I really do not know the history of all this. I love my DVD burner but am curious why there are no dual layer consumer burners around. Hollywood has them. Can anyone educate me (or post a link)?

Thanks

Hollywood doesn't "burn" the discs you buy in the stores.

commercial DVDs are pressed discs, whereas the discs that consumers author, are "burned".
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

By prohibiting dual layer DVD media and burner, there's at least some degree in stopping people from dubbing everything they rent from blockbuster or from the friends/family collection. I mean lets face it, it's "difficult" as is backing up movies using single layer DVD media, why make it easier for J6P?

Dual layer burning required a lot or research and since Hollywood just press and glue together they never had the problem.
However Dual layer is on it's way.
It seems to depend mostly on when the first drive manufacturer will launch it. If Philips is mart they will launch there own 8x DVD burner as a Dual allready. Since there allready have done some demonstrations with the OEM drives. Why not launch the drive as a dual layer drive ?

So then, how does this pressing work to create dual layers and how do DVDs know how to read them. This is such a cool forum for learning!!!!

They just press 2 disc's and glue them together.
I should have got some article at my parents home which explains it complete.
For the production of DVD recordables (single sided) C't germany published an article written by someone who is in the field.
