PX-708A and 1.03

Postby aviationwiz on Sat Oct 25, 2003 2:45 pm

Arggh,

With 1.03 and the PX-708A, once again, Memorex 4x DVD+R disks are starting at 6x, then dropping to 4x. This is really not good. Anyone burn any type of media that ALWAYS burns at 8x?

Just happened again, I'm really getting sick of this. I think I'll be using DVD-R until I can get my hands on some actual 8x media.

All my ricohjpnr01 discs works always at full 8x speed. But I do not have any memorex discs.

Taiyo Yuden always and Mitsubishi sometimes slows down to 4X near the end of the disc.

I actually love the 1.03 firmware update. I could not burn any +r discs with the 1.01 and the 1.02. Updated my drive to the 1.03 and can burn TDK 4x rated DVD+R discs at 8x no problems.

I've burned at least 10 Memorex DVD+Rs now and every one of them has burned at 8x. I've used Nero 5.5.10.42 and DVD Decrypter without any issues and I ordered my Memorex media from Amazon like most people. :) I've been quite happy with the 1.03 firmware, as I couldn't burn some Maxell DVD+Rs my boss picked up from Wal-Mart before the firmware update. I've also had success burning the two types of -R media I've used, one batch being 2x Memorex and the other being 4x Memorex.

I had this problem as well with my Memorex and 1.03. They used to burn at 8x perfectly with 1.02. Now the light is blinking like its burning at 8x but it is taking 15 minutes to burn a full disc so obviously only 4x. It still works perfect but its annoying. :x This is with Nero 6.0.0.19.

I read somewhere that your not able to go back to any previous firmware once it's been flashed with an update.

Yes just use the official flasher to go back to 1.02.

It's impossible to go back to 1.01 or 1.00 though.

do you mean you can go down from 1.03 to 1.02, but can't from 1.02 to 1.01 ??? :o very surprising!
(i don't expect you can go down to 1.00, since 1.00 firmware isn't available anywhere).

Yeah, that's what Plextor Europe says on their website:

http://www.plextor.be/English/technical ... _708A.html

It shows that 1.02 is the lowest you can use after you upgrade to it. Personally, 1.03 has been a great deal better than 1.02, but it doesn't sound like that holds for everyone so give it a try.

interesting...i wonder why...this isn't the usual thing with Plextor firmwares.
i wonder what is it about 1.02 that you can't go back down from it.

I bought a PX-708A with firmware 1.02. I updated it to 1.03. One type of media didn't work at 8x but only at 4x and a guy told me someone was able to write at 8x with the same type of media. So I reflashed the drive with firmware 1.02. Success at 8x this time. I updated it again to 1.03 yesterday. I had no problem.
