A couple of DVD-RAM questions...

OK, I've been thinking about getting an LG GMA-4020B DVD burner (which can burn DVD +, -, and RAM). I know that DVD-RAM discs used to require a case; but the newer ones can be removed from said case to increase compatibilty. However, I like the idea of a protective case for "mission critical" data backups. Can the LG drive handle those type of RAM discs?
Any place to buy the discs cheap? Perferably douple-sided 9.4GB discs?

Any thoughts about RAM? I know it's the least used of the three DVD recordable formats, and it is a "niche" product...but I think I fall into the niche. Heck, it's either RAM or MO. MO is ALOT faster, and 2.3GB on a 3.5" disc is nice, but it's also costly...

EDIT: I am aware that "2x" DVD-RAM really means "1x", since it does write and verify the data...

The GMA-4020B doesn't support DVD+R/RW. Only DVD-R/RW and RAM.

It doesn't support DVD-RAM discs in the cartridge.. unless they can be removed.

What about the GSA-4040B? It can do DVD-RAM at 3x.

GSA-4040B is clearly better for the money.

Rima.com sells some DVD-RAM 9.4 media for as low as US$5 per disc. Cartridge-protected DVD-RAM media cost more and most DVD-RAM writers on the market do not allow using cartridges.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check out the 4040 drive ASAP. Too bad about the cartridge support...might as well use the TDK Armor Plated discs...

as for a drive the uses the cartridge-type media, look into Panasonic drives.

MO's nice, been around FOREVER (I almost got a 128MG one back in the day before ZIP drives). Very fast for an optical. But, newegg doesn't carry them. Too hard to find, and way to much $.
