where does WinXP log its shutdowns and restarts?

another question

apprently my computer restarted itself.
i'm suspecting that this had happened a few times since my PSU was replaced.

where can i check/verify this?

You can find that information in the System log within the Event Viewer. Look for "eventlog" events. On a normal restart, you should see these "eventlog" events:

The Event log service was started.
Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 1 Uniprocessor Free.
The Event log service was stopped.

(sorted chronologically from bottom to top)

If your computer crashes, you may only see the top two events...

couple more questions:

is there any way to find the System Log as a file(s) (say text file) somewhere in D:\Windows instead of using the Event Viewer?

is there some way to change the settings for the System Log/Event Viewer, like for example its size (how far back it goes)?

You can find the event log files in the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\*.evt

Unfortunately, they aren't very easy to read with a text editor, so I'm not sure if they will be useful outside of the Event Viewer.

You can set Event Viewer properties by right-clicking on each log icon (Application, Security, System) within the Event Viewer.
