Given the long release time on this drive and the other drives that 8X compatible, I wonder how the heck did plextor get such an unprecedented jump on the entire industry where they have been the only player for months that offers 8X.

Almost unheard of in computer hardware.

I think it was mostly due to media compatibility. If the PX-708A didn't have the ability to write to some 4x DVD+R media at 8x, Plextor probably would have waited too.

Yep, the Plextors success is mainly due to this 4x at 8x thing.
Anyway, I don't see any reason for getting a 8x drive yet. It's hard enough to find proper 4x media for my 411s - so why should go for a 8x, spend 80$ more and use it for burning 2.4x/4x?

Congratulations to all Californians on the Election of the "Governator" !!

:o ? Hope this is meant ironical...

your point is well taken, however, due to the boatload of money that plextor must have made for having this drive when no other do, thus selling it at a premium price, could the others have not also had their writers write to the 4X at 8X, or does plextor have some proprietary chip that allows them to do so while others cant?

Plextor really hasn't said much.. other than that they used a pimped out version of PoweRec to do it.
