Thanks for a fast reply Kennyshin,
But to be frank I dont know what you are asking for as online trading is not common here in India.Even if people here have CC's they prefer shopping in markets, giving out cash money.
Also I am not sure if major players like LG,Samsung,Sony,Lite-On have launched DVD recorders in India.
Also 1US $=47 Indian rupees. So if you give me price in US $ I will be able to ask some of my relatives in the US to bring a dual format DVD Burner for me.
thanks a lot,

Pranav, here you go:
All Mumbai prices:

Pioneer 106: 21000 rupees.
Sony DRU500AX: 21500 rupees.
LG GSA-4040B: Checking up on that tomorrow.
Lite-On 411S: not released here yet.. should be here in a week or so.

That's pretty much all the drives available here right now. Too damn expensive.. stupid Govt. puts 80% tax on DVD writers, NO TAX on CD-Writers.. what the F^^* are they thinking??!!

Anyways, I'm going to Lamington Road tomorrow (Kennyshin:This is India's equivalent of Akihabara in Tokyo ). I'll post the latest prices here later.

Hope this helps :)
Bhairav.

Kennyshin:
Thanks for your offer to help! Unfortunately, as Pranav explained, the concept of webstores eg. Newegg selling stuff to us over the 'Net is a relatively new one here, with most of these sites doubling as auction sites. Examples: www.baazee.com.
It's a good business idea though.. Pranav, you with me on implementing it? :o  ?

Thanks a lot Bhairav for the prices. But as you said the charges here are veryyyyyyyy high.I saw the price for LG GSA-4040B on some site with shipping in the US was 156 dollars, which when converted in Indian currency comes close to Rs.7500/- and when I see your price they are alomost two times to three times. So whats the catch in taking so much tax ONLY on DVD-Writers?
Sure would be happy to purchase computer goods online, only if they are cheap.By the way I dont think I will buy a DVD writer for this high price.I think I will ask my brother to bring it from US when he comes to India next time, but I dont know when he will be able to come.
See ya guys later,

Thanks for the heads-up,dolphinus. 170-180 CDN.. that's about 6800-7200 rupees, right in line with the American prices. Is there a LOT of difference in hardware prices between Canada and the US?

@Pranav: Better to wait. Stupid Govt. policies.. at least they are implementing a 0% duty structure by 2005. Guess the WTO has SOME uses after all :D

That was listed before taxes.

It's kind of weird, I think almost all of the drive we have up here are imported from the US, but often our prices come out a little cheaper when you work in the conversion.... but never initially. When a drive is FIRST released, it's more expensive in Canada, but it seems to get cheaper quicker.

I would agree with Dolphinius, prices only initially are high when a product debuts in Canada, but then drop very fast. I suspect this has to do with the mom and pop shops getting a hold of grey market versions of the drive from the US, and an initiall attempt of Canadian retailers to take advantange of their customers due to lack of competition on the scale that US retailers must deal with.
