Backup Now! Deluxe 3.0.54 crashes on restore from DVD set

Postby sandersk on Sat Sep 20, 2003 10:30 pm

To anyone and, hopefully, NTI support monitoring this forum:

My Backup Now! Deluxe 3.0.54 is crashing during the restore of a multi-disk backup (about 10 GB) from DVD+R or DVD+RW. I do seem to be able to restore consistently from single disc backups.

Some of the symptoms before the crash are that dialogue boxes, such as those that appear while specifying alternative locations for the resotre, are not completely formed or the directory trees do not appear or buttons that normally would say "OK" or "Cancel" are blank. This does not happen all the time but is typical.

After stepping through the setup and starting the process, the program seems to "stall" and then crash. This only occurs when restoring data from DVDs not CDs. The drive is supported. It's the ATAPI DVD+RW 4x4x12 drive (Benq DW400A). I'm using decent media -- Memorex 4x +R/RW media. I am able to use the drive successfully with other backup programs. I have a 1.4 GHz Athlon Thunderbird with 1 GB PC133 memory. Hard drive (RAID) is 85.8 GB of which about 60 GB is free.

What little exception information I can provide from one of the crashes is this:
Code: 0xc0000005
Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000
Address: 0x000000000041cd0e

I was able to restore on a different computer with the same drive and software version. So I tried reinstalls (and clean reinstalls) at least three times now to see if that would fix whatever the problem is. That didn't help.

Also, every time I try to load an image backup file created by Drive Backup! (also v 3.0.54) into your DIB Explorer, the file is not recognized by the Explorer (on either computer).

The fact that you were able to restore the backup on a different system would indicate that you have a good backup. So the problem is not an issue with the program or with the backup itself. The problem would be with the drive you are using to restore the data. Some drives may encounter problems reading some recording methods and may require a firmware update to resolve the issue.

Try checking with the drive manufacturer to find out if they have a firmware update available for your drive. Updating the firmware may resolve your problem.

Another possible cause would an incompatibility with the discs you did the backup on. Disc manufacturers use different types of dye to create blank CD and DVD discs. Some drives may encounter incompatibilities with some dyes. This may the case for your problem. Try using a different name brand discs and then try to restore.
