Where do you get your media?

Postby Impulse on Sat Oct 18, 2003 1:28 pm

Hey, I'm new to the DVD burning arena and so I'm not really sure where to look for DVD media at this point. I just bought a Plextor PX-708a burner and I want to get some DVD+R media that can burn at 8x speeds. I've read through the media compatibility post for some of the brands to look for, but I was just wondering if any of you had some ideas about where to buy media from. Thanks for the help. :)

Oh, and just to let you, I don't have a CompUSA or Circuit City in my area. :( It sucks, especially for when I was checking out local stores for DVD+R prices. Best Buy and Staples seemed pretty pricey and Sam's Club sold their last Verbatium 30 pack of DVD+Rs before I got there. :P Anyways, thanks for the help.

Get the Memorex 25-pack 4x DVD+R discs from Amazon when the price is still $29.99. Amazon keeps changing the price between $29.99 and $39.99:

Then pay attention to your local Best Buy's weekly flyers for possible future sale on DVD discs. The trick is to stock up when they are on sale.

I got a 25 pack of Memorex 4x disks from Amazon last month. They are just about all gone, and no money to get more. Hopefully they will stay at $29.99 for a while.

Both BestBuy and Amazon are doing a sale on Memorex DVD + or - R @ $30, while supplies last. Grabbed 4 at amazon.

The ones I bought at Best Buy this week only burned at 4X and I had problems with 3 of them out of the first 5 but then the next 3 worked OK. A more detailed explanation of what went on is in the first thread in this group with (Sticky: Plextor PX-708A 8x DVD+R Media List) as it's subject.

Yeah, I've been planning on getting a 30 pack of Memorex from Amazon, since it is the cheapest name brand media that seems to work most of the time with the Plextor. My only concern was the ever increasing complaints about the media that concern me, all of which I have read in these forums. I'm not sure how concerned I should be, but it seems like some people have had a horrible time with Memorex media, burning at 8x and just plain burning correctly so that it will be a quality burn. I suppose I will only know for certain when I purchase a batch and see how it goes.

I bought a pack of Memorex 4x plus at BB and it's the good ricoh go4 I think, aanyways several of us tested it and posted on another spot here what it is. It burns at 4x on my Sony 500a and should work well at 8x with your Plex.
Memorex has a habit of using the best deal they find so one time you get excellent disks and the nest time it could be so so or plain garbage. Thats why everyone looks for different packaging and where the stuff is made at.

So far, I've bought all my media as Future Shop or Best Buy. The prices were pretty good, even when compared to US-based on-line stores.

I got a little hosed on my Memorex DVD+RW discs, it was like 3 for $20.
I see now both stores have x4 RW discs. My next purchase I guess.

Best Buy Canada had a great deal a few weeks back, Memorex DVD+R x4 , a 5 pack for $10. I bought 5 packs right away. Usually $15 or so a box.

I'm happy with the Memorex and Maxell discs I bought. Burned maybe 10 DVD+R's since I got my BenQ, not a glitch yet.
